An extensive range of rheological, optical and physical properties was determined to evaluate the relative performance characteristics of each system. It was found that small particle acrylics latex coupled with associative thickeners offer superior stability, coverage, sag resistance, whiteness index, improved freeze-thaw stability, Gilsonite porosity test and ease of application pproperties. The large particle latices offer better whiteness index, opacity, minimun synerisis and inferior freeze-thaw stability. Note de contenu : - Experimental

Les résultats ont montré que la performance optimale du film est réalisée pour une épaisseur de film de 40-5O μm. La performance du film peut être encore améliorée en réduisant la dimension des particules de poudre de très grande taille. The growing demand and increasing cost of TiO2 has driven the attention of paint technologists to search for other alternatives. There has been a continuous effort to replace part of TiO2 with fine particle size extenders in paint formulations. A detailed study has been undertaken to replace TiO2pigment by various percentages of calcined clays in two latex paint formulations. The properties like thixotropy, hiding power, light fastness, film brightness, scrub resistance and weather resistance has been determined to establish the optimum use of calcined clays in the paint formulation. Thixotropy, one of the important properties of latex paints has been studied with the help of the thixotropic loop area method. The viscosity data has also been analysed by Casson's equation. It has been found that the calcined clays can replace up to 20% TiO2 in paints formulation without having any adverse effect on their properties. Note de contenu : - Materials

According to DIN 53162, for the paint applied on a black and white substrate, the contrast ratio must be equal to 0.98. This means that a difference of about two percent between the value of colour on a black Yb and on a white Yw can be tolerated. Note de contenu : - Kubelka-Munk theory
