(Wikipedia)

Mesures de rendementIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Investigation of the influence of breed, sex and age factors on hide and leather characteristics indicates that when young Afrikaner and Friesland bulls and steers are reared under intensive feedlot conditions, bulls have a higher yield of green hide mass than steers and exhibit more favourable leather properties than steers, especially with regard to tensile strength in Friesland bulls. With the onset of sexual maturity in bulls after 12 months of age, accompanying changes in leather physical properties were apparent and tensile strength showed a decline particularly in Friesland bull leathers. These changes in hide physical properties appear to parallel increases in the level of natural crosslinking of the collagen molecular structure during ageing and maturation. Main differences between the two breeds studied were that Afrikaner animals were superior in terms of hide and leather yield whereas the leather of Friesland cattle was qualitatively superior. Peau humaineIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Skin samples obtained from various parts of the animal and human bodies have been investigated using the electron microscope techniques. This study shows that the structure of the entire skin of an animal is not of homogeneous nature. The variations followed a definite pattern suggesting a general classification of the various parts of the skin into flexible and non-flexible areas. From the electron microscopical observations, it may be summarised that some common features of skin samples obtained from flexible areas were as follows : presence of individual fibrils, considerable broken fibrils, increased periodicity and decreased diameter of the fibrils, sparse distribution of collagen fibrils in sections, presence of low amounts of amorphous materials, occurrence of circular structure on the surface of the skin. On the contrary non-flexible areas have the following common features : tendency in fibrils to form compact bundles, considerable amounts of intact fibril, comparatively decreased periodicity and increased diameter of the fibrils, close packing of collagen fibrils in sections, presence of large amounts of amorphous materials, and presence of figures resembling triangles and rhombuses on the surface of the skin. Retannage
Tannage au chromeIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Full chrome leathers were prepared, using the same total amount of tanning agent for all samples but varying the proportions offered in the initial tannage and in the retannage (after storage). Quantitative measurements showed that those batches which received a low level of initial tannage and a substantial retannage had less colour variation than those given a fuller initial tannage and smaller retannage. The improvement was seen even after dyeing to a medium brown. Only after dark, surface dyeing were colour differences of the batches brought to a similar level.
Chrome retan leathers were also made, with the chrome tanning being carried out in either one step or as a low-level initial process with a retannage to the required Cr2O3 content immediately before subsequent processing. Batches of skins from the latter method were move level than those from the one-step chrome tanning process, with the improvement still being considerable after vegetable retanning and dyeing to a medium brown. Bleaching, by the use of a proprietary Syntan, only marginally reduced the variation of colour within any pack.Note de contenu : - Instrumental measurement of colour variation and its relevance to visual assessments

In the last year an exhibit produced by BLMRA and the Leather Institute has been shown at agricultural shows with the aim of showing the farmer how the damage may be minimised. On the same subject, a paper has been given to the Dermatology Group of the British Veterinary Association and also to the Association of Meat Inspectors. During the preparation of this paper a selection was made from the large collection of photographs of skin diseases made by BLMRA over the years. As is it the first time these photographs have been collected together in this form, this paper is presented here for the interest of tanners. Note de contenu : - DAMAGE BY PARASITES

Wet-blue (tannage)Peau tannée au chrome (le chrome donne une couleur bleue)Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : A simple recycling system was used in the preparation of wet-blue leathers, with the residual chrome tanning liquor being replenished with acid and salt before being used for pickling the next batch of bated hide. Chrome tanning powder was added to the liquor on completion of pickling, to give a total offer of the required amount, with the wet blues thus produced being compared to those prepared by a conventional process. Two series of experiments were carried out to give either "low chrome" (1.8 % Cr203, dry weight basis) or "normal chrome" (2.5 % Cr203) wet blues. Within each series, the initial properties and storage behaviour were unaffected by the use of recycled, rather than fresh, chrome tanning liquors. Low chrome and normal chrome samples displayed similar stability under the storage conditions used, with neither set showing deterioration of the measured properties after the prescribed holding time. Colour measurements on the wet-blues before and after storage showed that the leathers from recycled liquors did not undergo changes greater than those of the control samples, and that between-batch colour differences should not be a problem in practical application. Wastage of chrome tanning salt, and hence concentration of chrome in the effluent, was reduced by approximately 90 % by recycling the residual tanning liquor, rather than discarding it as in a normal process. Overall consumption of chrome tanning salt was reduced by 13 % (low chrome series) and by 24 % (normal chrome series) compared to that of similar, conventional processes. EvaluationIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In most works, selection of dyes for the dyeing of leather is based on long years of practical experience. Yet accelerating changes in fashion which involve changes in processing methods, particularly regarding retanning, fatliquoring, etc., as well as changes in countries of origin of skins, result in a change of behaviour of these leathers during dyeing. Frequently operational considerations prevent changes in substrate and in method of dyeing. Dyeing results can, however, be substantially improved by an optimum dye selection in accordance with recently established criteria. The dyeing behaviour of any dye on leather is influenced by many factors. In is difficult to create conditions that are exactly reproducible. Under the name of "Dermagen testing method" a process has been developed which is characterised by the mass-dyeing of a leather pulp made of shavings of a standard-tanned leather. Depending on the standard depth figures are established for build-up power, the saturation limit as well as the affinity of a dye. On the basis of the numbers of affinity and the build-up power dues can be won about the behaviour of dye or combinations of dyes on leathers of varying pretreatment. Thus the selection of dyes on the basis of their dyeing behaviour is greatly simplified. Note de contenu : - The dermagen testing method

TranspirationIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Oxazolidines are heterocyclic derivatives obtained by the reaction of aminohydroxy compounds with aldehydes. The bifunctional behaviour of these oxazolidines is responsible for their cross-linking reactions with phenols and proteins. Two typical oxazolidines, namely 4,4-Dimethyl-1,3-oxazolidine and 1-Aza-3,7-dioxabicyclo-5-ethyl (3,3,0) Octane have been studied extensively for their use as tanning agents and it has been found that both these oxazolidines react with hide protein and impart special characteristics to leather when tanned in conjunction with syntan, chrome or vegetable tanning materials.
4,4-Dimethyl-1,3-oxazolidine has been found especially suitable for pretanning of greasy pickled sheepskins, subsequently to be degreased with aqueous degreasing systems. Pickled sheepskin even at 3-5 % level of application gives shrinkage temperatures around 70-75°C within an hour of treatment and unlike glutaraldehyde, the pretanned leather remains natural white and so may be finally tanned with syntan or zirconium for white leather.
1-Aza-3,7-dioxabicyclo-5-ethyl (3,3,0) Octane on the other hand has been found suitable for chrome or vegetable combination tannages of all kinds of leather, especially wool skin tannages where the wool remains spotless white even if the pH of the exhaust chrome liquor moves up to 4.5. Vegetable tanned leather pre-treated with 1-Aza-3,7-dioxabicyclo-5-ethyl (3,3,0) Octane gives higher degree of tannage, higher shrinkage temperature and about 50 % lower water solubles than conventional tannage. Normal vegetable tanned leather when retanned with about 10 % of 1-Aza-3,7-dioxa-bicyclo-5-ethyl (3,3,0) Octane for an hour gives a shrinkage temperature around 100°c. Fuither, it has been found that the use of oxazolidine affords better utilisation of chrome when used in chrome tanning. The reduced chrome content in the exhaust liquors helps in pollution control.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Effect of initial pH and time - Effect of concentration - Tannage in combination with chrome - Tannage in combination with vegetable tanning materials - Comparison with glutaraldehyde-chrome combination tannages. Already performance levels are comparable to those found on many commercial solvent based systems. There is every likelihood that these levels will be increased. Chemical costs are likely to be substantially less than with conventional spray finishing of solvent diluted lacquers. Savings on chemicals are greater than the increased capital investment necessary for the roller-coating equipment which we believe is an essential pre-requisite for the industrial application of UV-curing finishes by the leather industry. Cuirs et peaux -- Défauts -- ClassificationIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Most of the grain defects in leather occur during the life of the animal on the farm and, indeed, the quality of the leather lies very much in the hands of the farmer, but the farmer is generally unaware of the extent of the damage or the financial losses involved.
As it is the first time these photographs have been collected together in this form, this paper is presented here for the interest of tanners.
The aesthetic quality of leather depends to a very great extent on the fine smooth outer or grain surface, which is exposed once the tanner removes the epidermis and hairs by means of chemicals during the early stages of processing. Character is given to this surface by the mouths of the hair follicles, which are grouped in patterns that are distinctive according to the animal type from which the skin was taken. For example, Fig. 1 shows the grain surface of leather prepared from cattle hide and here the follicle mouths are all equal in size and arranged in rows.
Figure 2 shows the grain surface of leather produced from fine woolled sheep, such as Merino: here the numerous wool follicles are arranged in groups.
This outer surface of the leather is frequently marred by damage to the skin during the life of the animal, damage caused by parasites, abrasion, dung and the injections and brands applied by the farmer.
In the United Kingdom the main bulk of leather is produced from skins of cattle and sheep, so the defects in this paper are restricted to these two animal types.Note de contenu : - Damage by parasites

Leather for the boat's hull was made from oak-tanned ox hide impregnated with wool grease; it contained 35% dichloromethane extractables (IUC/4), had a water absorbtion (IUP/7) of 14% after 72 h, and resisted penetration by 3.5 % saline for more than 2000 h (IUP/1 1). The wooden frame was lashed together with alum tanned laces, which had a wet-breaking load of 45 kg. The transatlantic voyage of 4500 miles was completed in two stages and took 111 days (85 days at open sea), the hull leather retained its structural stability and initial water resistance. TannageIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Public sewage treatment authorities are often bath to accept tannery effluents because they are apprehensive either about the effects of specific components, e.g. heavy metals and sulphides on their processes, or of the high COD to BOD ratios which have been cited as indicating non-biodegradability. Real resistance to treatability is even more relevant to onsite biological treatment by the tannery.
The work described below was undertaken to investigate both of these aspects. Laboratory trials were carried out, using various techniques, to examine the inherent treatability of a number of tanning materials, dyestuffs and other chemicals widely used in tannery processes. Later, one of the techniques was employed in a study of the treatment of a mixed effluent, the work subsequently being extended to pilot plant operation in a tannery.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES : Laboratory scale activated sludge plants (ASP) - Respirometry

Taille des particulesIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The term emulsion, as applied to coating binders as is known today, is, in fact, a misnomer since by definition an emulsion is a mixture of two or more immiscible liquids, and binders are a mixture of an immiscible solid and a liquid. The correct terminology should thus be a resin dispersion but, for the sake of convenience, will always be referred to as "emulsion".
Aqueous polymers exist as three specific types. These types vary very significantly in both physical and mechani-cal properties. These three types are aqueous dispersions or emulsions, colloidal dispersions and true solutions.
Aqueous dispersions, or emulsions as they are commonly known, can be defined as discrete particles of high molecular weight polymer dispersed in an aqueous medium. The solid polymer is known as the disperse phase, while the water is the disperse medium.
Colloidal dispersions can be considered to be ultra-fine particles or molecular weight intermediates between that of aqueous dispersions and true solutions. The polymers contain polar groups, either acidic or basic, which do impart some degree of solubility. The colloidal dispersions can also be considered as hybrids of dispersions and true solutions, in that they possess properties which are common and characteristic of both types. True solutions, or water reducible resins, are polymers in which polymerisation reactions are performed in water miscible organic solvents such as esters and alcohols, or solubilised by the addition of alkali, i.e. neutralisation. Solubility is also attributed to polar groups on the polymer side chains. The polymers are thus totally soluble in the medium water.
The above generalisation will thus suffice to explain the varions "states" in which aqueous polymers are available. Emulsions find application in the function as binders or topcoats for leather finishing, while colloidal dispersions are used to a smaller extent as thickeners for the finish mixes and more commonly, as pasting adhesives. Water reducible urethane lacquers are also the colloidal dispersions type. True solutions are not currently used in leather finishing but are in the paint industry, particularly the automotive and appliance industries.Note de contenu : - TYPES OF EMULSIONS

RayuresIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In the Republic of Ireland the gross annual output of undressed hides and skins and manufactured leather goods exceeded £16 million in 1976. Whilst the hides of some countries command high prices because of their consistent good grading and consequent suitability for the manufacture of high priced goods, local hides are often down-graded because of defects of the grain or upper surface. Damage may occur ante-mortem. Post-mortem damage may occur at the time of flaying, as a result of poor storage or when processed.
Tancous et al. (1959) considered that stable flies, horn flies and sucking flies caused leather damage but produced no experimental evidence, however Everett et al. (1977) provide evidence that in the United States the prime cause of damage was bard ticks, with Demodex bovis (the hair follicle mite) also being important.
In a preliminary survey conducted in the Republic of Ireland, Baker (1973) showed the most common defect to be that of multiple scratches with consequent down-grading. He considered the cause to be ectoparasites. To substantiate the hypothesis that the multiple scratch defect results from ectoparasitism the following survey and experiments were undertaken.Note de contenu : - Table 1 : Survey of irish hides

DélainageIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In experiments on rapid processing of pelts with paints made of sodium sulphide and caustic soda thickened with lime, good pull was achieved after 2 h with a paint at 2000 mgEq NaOH/1 containing not less than 6° Bé sodium sulphide (4 % Na2S). The temperature in pile was controlled by the temperature of the pelt at painting. Raising the temperature in pile (18° was compared to 22°c) favoured wool loosening but unduly loosened the "scud" (epidermal residue left over the pelt) especially if the paint contained a high amount of caustic soda. After a 2 h wool pull and liming at cool temperatures (16° was compared with 26°c falling to 23° overnight) the pelt was more mottled than the normal current production. Liming at 32°c and pH 12.5 reduced mottle to a level satisfactory for nappa leathei and gave fuller feeling leather, but one of three cooperating tanners found some dull grain in leather from 2 h pull and warm liming. Liming at 32°c may be dangerously warm for works conditions: temperature not higher than 28 ° is recommended. The relation between the blood vessels in the skin and plumping on the one hand and, on the other, increased temperature and opening up of the fibre structure explains the development of mottle and its avoidance by warm liming.
