Tannage Résumé : The work presented deals with the treatment of spent tanning liquor using the chromium cake from alkall enzymatic hydrolysis of leather shavings, the scheme is seen as a part of complete recycling of chromium in the leather industry.
There is a long-term worldwide effort to keep all chromium under control, ideally in a closed loop, since chromium, especially in its hexavalent form, has a negative impact on the environment and human health. The filtration cake obtained by hydrolysis contains a significant amount of chromium and, due to its alkaline character it could be used for the treatment of spent tanning liquor. The work demonstrates that total dechroming of spent tanning liquor is possible. The efficiency of the process depends on the weight ratio between chromium cake and spent tanning liquor and on the retention time. Using a ratio of 0.3 and a retention time of 1 hour, the dechroming level achieved was 81.6%; for a ratio of 1, the dechroming reached up to 98.3%. Using the tonner ratio, the dechroming level increased to 94.1% atter 6 hours. The method is based on the reaction Al(III) with morin to form a yellow complex with maximum absorption at 425nm in the presence of cationic surfactant CPC and glacial acetic acid. In the presence of cationic surfactant CPC, the sensitivity of the chromogenic reaction was greatly improved. Under the optimized conditions, calibration graphs for Al(III) are linear in the range 5-150g l-1 with a detection limit of 0.0125g l-1 (3σ). The reproducibility was satisfactory with a relative standard deviation of 1.7% for ten determinations of 50μg l-1 Al(III). With a sample solution of 450μl being injected, the sampling frequency is 60/h. As a result, a part of the chemicals inevitably remain in the tannery wastewater and form major pollutants. Biological treatment plays a significant role in removing these chemicals from wastewater and biodegradability of these chemicals is directly related to their environmental friendliness. Recently, we have been undertaking a systematic evaluation of the biodegradability of typical leather chemicals so as to characterize their environmental impact as exactly as possible. In this paper, the biodegradation behaviours of six typical fatliquor components, including sulphated castor, sulphated neatsfoot oil, sulphated fish oil, lecithin, chlorinated paraffin and alkyl sulfonyl chloride, were investigated. It has been found that four of them, sulphated castor, neatsfoot oil, fish oil and lecithin, can be effectively degraded by the activated sludge from the wastewater treatment plant of the tannery, which suggests that these four kinds of fatliquors are suitable for use in leather making in consideration of their environmental friendliness. However, the two other kinds of fatliquors, chlorinated paraffin and alkyl sulfonyl chloride, cannot be degraded by activated sludge and the presence of alkyl sulfonyl chloride in wastewater will lead to poisoning of the activated sludge, which indicates that these two kinds of fatliquors should be limited in use.
