Travail de rivière (cuir)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Over the years the enzymatic bating process for both hides and skins has become indispensable, it renders the leather soft, resilient and smooth. The basic raw materials for a bate have ranged from dog dung and pigeon faeces to synthetic enzymes.
The application of the formerly used natural materials was difficult and the quality of the leather produced was not reproducible and was inconsistent. The skins might be over -bated or under -bated depending on the activity of the bate and the enzyme content of the material used.
The current material used for the preparation of a bate is cow pancreas, blended with a carrier substance at a suitable concentration giving an activity of about 1300 units. The leather produced using such materials is compared with that produced using a widely applied commercial bating material (Oropon, Rohm and Haas) with regard to quality, strength and softness. Various compositions were used starting from 0.5% at increments of 0.25% to 1.5% based on limed weight.
These trials were compared with a controlled experiment using 0.5% of the commercial bating material which has a strength of 1500 units as checked by the method of analysis adopted in this work (Appendix A).
72 wet-salted sheep and goat skins were divided equally into two groups, each group contained 6 skins of either type.
The skins of the two groups were processed through soaking, unhairing, liming deliming, bating, pickling, chrome tannage, retannage, drying, and finishing.
The leather produced is of good quality and it does not differ from the leather produced using imported bating materials.Note de contenu : - Producing the bate

The sulphated blend was found to compare favourably with an imported equivalent that is commonly used in Nigerian tanneries. In addition, the blend appears to fix more oil on the leathers than the control. The product rendered semi-chrome and chrome retanned leathers more supple than the chrome and vegetable tanned leather. All leathers fatted with the sulphated blend meet most of the International Standard Organisation (ISO) specifications for physical and chemical properties for their respective categories.
Tannage Résumé : Among the novel collagen crosslinkers currently being studied, polyepoxides (e.g. based on aliphatic polyol glycidyl ether), have shown certain potential in organic tannage applications. The work reported here is a comparison of the tanning abilities of some commercial epoxides with commonly used organic tanning agents, i.e. glutaraldehyde, oxazolidine and THPS. Studies have been based on the progress of tannage followed via crosslink density determination of treated gelatine (i.e. used as a collagen model). The investigation has also been concerned with comparing the physical, chemical, biological and morphological characters of the resultant leather.
The results show that the order of tanning ability to be: THPS > oxazolidine > glutaraldehyde >> epoxide. Epoxide, when used alone, is a fairly weak crosslinker of collagen and has to be used in relatively large quantities (an offer of 20% of skin weight). The epoxide has a slow reaction rate at room temperature and the resulting leather has lower hydrothermal stability (82°C) with a lower reacted amine content and tensile strength. However, this epoxide treated leather has high apparent density, moisture content and anti-trypsin degradation ability. The differences in tannage mechanisms for these reagents are discussed, in order to interpret the limitations of this type of epoxide.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE : Leather characterisation methods

ZirconiumIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : A new tetrakis hydroxymethyl phosphonium sulphate (THPS)-zirconium combination tanning system has been developed. The optimum dosage of THPS, pickling pH and basifying pH were 2.0%, 3.5 and 5.0, respectively. The amount of THPS and zirconium sulphate were optimized at 2.0% and 2.5% (based on the pelt weight). The influence of ligands on the shrinkage temperature (Ts) of leathers has also been studied and the Ts of THPS alone and THPS-zirconium combination tanned leathers was much better than the relevant colour fastness to dry/wet rub of THPS alone tanned leathers.
Scanning electron microscopic studies show that the fibre weave of THPS-zirconium combination tanned leather was much closer than for THPS only tanned leather and the fibre weave of THPS-zirconium combination tanned leather was closer with an increase of amount of zirconium sulphate. Hence, this proves that the softness was reduced with an increase of the amount of zirconium sulphate and that the reactivity of zirconium sulphate with collagen fibre was very strong. The bulk trial carried out in Haining Shangyuan Leather Co., Ltd., proved that all indexes of the leather reached Chinese standard requirements.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE : Materials - Determination of Ts - Optimization of the dosage of THPS - Optimizing pH - THPS-zirconium combination tanning - Physical testing and handle of leather - Test of Cr2O3, Cr6+ and formaldehyde content - Analysis with scanning electron microscopic (SEM)
