Tannage Résumé : The use of oxidizing agent, such as hydrogen peroxide, was reported to shorten the oxidation process time of chamois tanning. Appropriate conditions for this tanning are needed in order to improve its process efficiency, and to obtain a satisfactory leather quality. The objectives of our study were to investigate the effects of oxidation times in chamois tanning on the quality of the resulting leather, and to determine the best condition of the oxidation time. The experiments were conducted by tanning pickled goatskin for 4, 6, and 8 hours oxidation times inside a rotary drum, and 1, 2, and 3 days of oxidation times outside the drum. The physical, chemical, and organoleptic properties of the leathers were then tested. This study showed that they fulfilled the quality requirements for chamois leather. The best conditions for oxidation were oxidation times of eight hours inside, and one day outside a rotary drum. Therefore, the use of hydrogen peroxide oxidizing agent shortened the oxidation process outside the rotary drum in chamois leather production from nine to two days. TannageIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : A disadvantage of chamois leather tanning practiced nowadays is that its oxidation process takes relatively long time, i.e. 9 to 14 days. The use of an oxidizing agent, such as sodium percarbonate was reported to shorten the tanning oxidation process. However, the price of this oxidizing agent is relatively high; a constraint in its application. Other oxidizing agents, such as hydrogen peroxide, may have the same function of accelerating the process. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of type and concentration of oxidizing agents in order to obtain the optimum combination of process acceleration and chamois leather characteristics. This study consisted of the leather tanning with rubber seed oil with oil oxidation comparing two types of oxidizing agents at three concentrations of each oxidizing agents; testing of physical, chemical, and organoleptic properties of the leathers, and microscopic studies of the leathers. The results of this study indicate that hydrogen peroxide could be used as oxidizing agents for the chamois leather manufacture, since the chamois leather produced met the quality standards. The best treatment of this trial was hydrogen peroxide at 6% (w/w based on of the weight of rubber seed oil applied). The use of hydrogen peroxide could shorten the oxidation process from 9-14 days to about three days.
On distingue trois types.

They not only create colour, but, if the reactions are conducted in the presence of collagen, the pigments are bound to the collagen by covalent bonds, which confer a tanning effect.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES : Materials - Dyeing experiments - Measurements of colour - Measurement of hydrothermal stability

Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Indonesia is one of the countries having the largest rubber plantations in the world. Besides producing latex, rubber plantations produce also about 1500kg/hectare of rubber seeds, which has not been utilised optimally. Rubber seed oil may be able to be used for chamois leather tanning.
Chamois leather is a popular leather article in the market, as it has unique uses, such as in high quality gasoline filtration and cleaning of optical equipment (spectacles, windows, vehicle, jewellery, silverware, etc.). In this research, the use of rubber seed oil for chamois tanning was investigated. The objectives of the research were to discover whether the rubber seed oil could be used as chamois leather tanning agent, and to identify chemical, physical as well as organoleptic properties of the rubber seed oil tanned leather were similar to those of fish oil tanned leather. In terms of colour and odour, rubber seed tanned leather were a pH of 6.9-7.0 and ash content of 4.9 %. Its physical properties were thickness of 0.4-1.0mm, tensile strength of 27.6/mm2, elongation at break of 104 %, and water absorption of 380 % (2 hours). The organoleptic properties of the leather, i.e. softness, colour, and odour, were good to excellent. All of those characteristics fulfill the quality requirements for chamois leather. Thererfore, rubber seed oil might be suitable to use as a substitute for fish oil in oil tanning for chamois leather production.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gIHxgch4xPUacEmF-NUpN0KDpGfhkHct/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=6107

Tannage Résumé : Polyphenols are the basic building blocks of natural skin and hair pigments: they can be polymerised to create versions of natural black, brown and orange melanins. These reactions can be catalysed by laccase: not only dothey create colour, but also, if they are conducted in the presence of collagen, the resulting pigment is bound to the leather in a covalent tanning manner. Therefore, the leather becomes coloured by a lightfast pigment, which is firmly fixed. It has not proved possible to create a pure black, but earth shades from green to brown/black are easily produced. It appears to be a feature of this type of stabilising mechanism for collagen, the creation of a polyphenol matrix around the triple helix, that it has the added benefit of actually strengthening the leather. Since every traditional process step effectively weakens collagen, especially tanning, this is the first chemical reaction that has been shown to reverse that effect.
