Titre : Alum and the leather industry Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Roy Thomson, Auteur Année de publication : 2009 Article en page(s) : p. 125-129 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : It has been suggested that alum was used to produce leather from at least egyptian and babylonian times but recent work suggests that alum was used in the process of dyeing skinss rather than for tanning. Lack of definitive evidence for the use of alum for tawing during the roman period will be referred to. Linguistic studies indicate that the difference between the materials produced by alum and vegetable tannins were recognised, appreciated and exploited by mediaeval craftsmen. The methods employed during mediaeval and later times for the manufacture of alum tawed skins as revealed in contemporary documents will be discussed. Later developments in the modification of tawing processes to give a wider range of leather properties will be mentioned. recent developments in the production of archival bookbinding leathers and the challenges arising when conserving alum tawed leather artefacts will be summarised. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The aim of this work is the characterization and evaluation of four types of topcoats used in leather finished leather samples using the same products. The samples were tested in the laboratory to evaluate their physical resistances and fastness properties.
A comparison of results shows that all the products studied for each type of topcoat present practically the same functional groups ; there are no significatn differences between the recorded spectra of each of the products in a group and the spectra once they have been applied to the leather. In addition, there are no significant differences in the physical resistances and fastnesses obtained, except for the organoleptic properties (level of gloss, feel, etc.). However, strong evidence seems to indicate that topcoat improves wet properties of the finished leather. Moreover, the study of th IR spectra bothy of the products and finished leather samples after an accelerated ageing test provides more objective date rather than that obtained from traditional methods.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1dtpmNCmm-frnElkxvFF1NHmiOWmwsrI-/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=6102

Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The chemical and physical behaviour of skin collagen fibre was studied in alkali solutions. After treatment with sodium hydroxide and calcium hydroxide solutions, the characteristic D-period of collagen fibril could not be seen by TEM. The fibril diameter increased by swelling in alkali solutions. The swelling occured both inter and intra fibrils. The hydrolysate of collagen in alkali solution was seen as a flat structure which illustrated that the hydrolysate was denatured in alkaline solutions. When collagen fibre was treated in alkali solutions for long periods, the isoelectric points of collagen hydrolysate were between 4.5 and 5.0. The higher the concentration of alkali solution, the lower the isoelectric point of the hydrolysate. During alkali treatments, the isoelectric point shifted to lower pH and, after 48 hour treatment, the isoelectric point reached equilibrium and did not change further. The triple helix conformation of collagen was destroyed when collagen was hydrolyzed in solutions of alkali according to the CD spectrum. SDS-PAGE electrophoresis results showed that hydrolysate of collagen in alkali solutions presented as a continuous band, no characteristic band of collagen appeared. The hydrolysis of collagen fibre in alkali solution not only happened at inter-molecular points, but also happened at peptide bonds of collagen molecule which was randomly hydrolysed. Urbaniak, Auteur Année de publication : 2009 Article en page(s) : p. 145-147 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The research was aimed at the decrease of sewage salinity. The aim was to be achieved by means of recirculation, i.e., technological reuse of chromium-free pickling/tanning baths (supernatant). Supernatant was used inpickling/tanning process of hides. Before the subsequent use chlorides were supplemented. In the paper the number of technological cycles that can be carried out without any damage to the quality of hides has been determined. The resutls have been compared with results achieved in traditional technology, without the use of recirculation.
After subsequent recirculation cycles, the supernatant was assessed by the following factors : chlorides, sulphates, general chromium, Kiejdahl general nitrogen, organic nitrogen, chemical oxygen demand (COD), 5- day biological oxygen demand (BOD5). The quality of hides was assessed in wet blue and crust semi-finished products.
It has been found that supernatant recirculation in chromium pickling/tanning of hides is fully possible and it does not lower the quality of hides. After eight recirculations the general consumption of sodium chloride decreased by about 45 % compared with the amound used in traditional hide pickling process.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/18jFtJl8Pbh2brOLWYWHmPjAzV19Se0xp/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=6104

Titre : Are indexes characterizing the efficiency of biological treatment of wastewater reliable criterIa for the assessment of the impact of chromium compounds on activated sludge ? Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Barbara Felicjaniak, Auteur Année de publication : 2009 Article en page(s) : p. 152-157 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The essay presents the research on the impact of chromium compounds on the effectiveness of biological treatment of effluents by activated sludge, the structure of activated, sludge, the composition of microfauna and sedimentation characteristics of activated sludge. The determinations of the indexes of pollution of wastewater have been carried out according to Polish standards, with the exception of CODCr of biologically has been developed, eliminating the impact of hexavalent chromium added to effluents.
In the research it has been established that oxygen indicators were not a reliable criterion for the assessment of impact of chromium compounds on activated sludge. Their value did not reflect the level of activated sludge degradation. The effluents treated with strongly degraded activated sludge, with a completely fibrous structure and very little of microfauna had low values of oxygen indictors, testifying to effective treatment. With the increase of chromium concentration in the effluents undergoing treatment there was an increase in the count of filiform bacteria, most probably that is why ; notwithstanding the high concentrations of chromium compounds, activated sludge, due to the fact that it was impossible to establish which part of organic substances was metabolized by heterotrophic bacteria characteristic of activated sludge, and which part by filiform bacteria.
It was also misleading to analyze the sedimentation characteristics of activated sludge on the basis of sludge volume index (SVI). Strongly degraded sludges with completely fibrous structure were characterized by low values of volume indexes testifying to good sedimentation characteristics. In fact, such fibrous sludge sedimented very well, but the reasons for this were adsorbed chromium compounds.
In the research it has been established that oxygen indicators were not a reliable criterion for the assessment of the impact of chromium compounds on activated sludge. the microscopic structure research and microfauna composition examination of the activated sludge proved necessary.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1e5NRTJIfJUgy7ANATNAyk9z8otbZjlzf/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=6106

Kartika, Auteur ; Muslich, Auteur Année de publication : 2009 Article en page(s) : p. 158-161 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Indonesia is one of the countries having the largest rubber plantations in the world. Besides producing latex, rubber plantations produce also about 1500kg/hectare of rubber seeds, which has not been utilised optimally. Rubber seed oil may be able to be used for chamois leather tanning.
Chamois leather is a popular leather article in the market, as it has unique uses, such as in high quality gasoline filtration and cleaning of optical equipment (spectacles, windows, vehicle, jewellery, silverware, etc.). In this research, the use of rubber seed oil for chamois tanning was investigated. The objectives of the research were to discover whether the rubber seed oil could be used as chamois leather tanning agent, and to identify chemical, physical as well as organoleptic properties of the rubber seed oil tanned leather were similar to those of fish oil tanned leather. In terms of colour and odour, rubber seed tanned leather were a pH of 6.9-7.0 and ash content of 4.9 %. Its physical properties were thickness of 0.4-1.0mm, tensile strength of 27.6/mm2, elongation at break of 104 %, and water absorption of 380 % (2 hours). The organoleptic properties of the leather, i.e. softness, colour, and odour, were good to excellent. All of those characteristics fulfill the quality requirements for chamois leather. Thererfore, rubber seed oil might be suitable to use as a substitute for fish oil in oil tanning for chamois leather production.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gIHxgch4xPUacEmF-NUpN0KDpGfhkHct/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=6107

A multicriteria statistical optimization method can be used in the case where material properties are estimated as the function of several parameters. The present experiments were realized according to a factorial design of 23 . The relative humidity during conditioning the leather samples and the rate of tensile elongation were taken as independent variables. It was possible to establish the utility values just by determining a set of coefficients which will decide on a leather’s usefulness in a specific application and to assign to them their relative importance as well as the range of satisfactory values.
