Spectrométrie de masseIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In the last two years, Europe has experienced a rise in skin allergy and dermatitis due to goods of an Asian provenance that have been treated with dimethylfumarate (DMFU). Accordingly, laboratories in the leather and footwear sectors have been obliged to develop analytical methods to determine the presence of this substance given the absence of an official method. The ban on DMFU as laid down in Decision 2009/251 of the European Union establishes a maximum concentration of DMFU in products of 0.1 mg/kg. A simple non-destructive rapid method based on manual headspace solid-phase micro extraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is proposed to detect DMFU in leather and footwear. Thereafter, the samples in which DMFU is detected are analysed by a solid-liquid extraction (SLE) with acetone after which DMFU is quantitatively determined by GC-MS. The quantitative method is validated in terms of linearity, precision, sensitivity and recovery; demonstrating its reliability. Quantification is performed using naphthalene-D8 as internal standard. The detection limits are 0.005 mg/kg and 0.03 mg/kg for the HS-SPME-GC-MS and SLE-GC-MS methods, respectively. Given that these limits are below the maximum limit of 0.1 mg/kg imposed by the European Union, the proposed methods are suitable for determining DMFU content in real samples. Spectrométrie de masseIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The composition of fatty spew on leather was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Meanwhile, the volatile substances in the fogging test of leather were identified by GC-MS. With the combination of all the data obtained, it was found that the predominant components of fatty spew were palmitic acid methyl ester, oleic acid methyl ester and stearic acid methyl ester, and their relative content ratio is approximately 8 : 1 : 1. An interesting phenomenon was that no fatty acids are detected in fatty spew although they are commonly regarded as the origin of this defect. These facts strongly suggest that the fatty acid methyl esters existing in fatliquors are the main origin of fatty spew defect in leather, and also one of the probable contributions to fogging. Extraction (chimie)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Given the carcinogenic character of formaldehyde, it should be reliably determined in any substrate. The EN ISO 17226 Standard is the Official Method to quantify formaldehyde in leather. However, some misunderstandings may arise from the practical conditions given by the Standard for the extraction of formaldehyde. Two agitation methods (magnetic agitation and reciprocal linear agitation), which fulfill the conditions of the Standard, have been used for the extraction of formaldehyde in twenty two samples of wet-blue split leather treated with resins synthesized with formaldehyde and with/without the addition of vegetable compounds. The agitation method influences the formaldehyde content and differences between the agitation methods depend on the formaldehyde resins and vegetable compounds applied. Magnetic agitation leads to formaldehyde contents that are 26% greater than those obtained when the reciprocal linear agitation method is used. Major brands specify allowable limits for formaldehyde content, which depend on the user (adult or babies) and whether the article is in direct contact with the skin. A high percentage of disagreement (33.3%) has been observed between the agitation methods in fulfilling the allowable limits. One-third of the formaldehyde content results that fulfilled the allowable limits with the reciprocal linear agitation method failed when the magnetic method was applied. The situation urges the clarification of the shaking method in the EN ISO 17226 Standard to avoid the high level of contradictory results between methods that meet the agitation conditions of the Standard. SurfactantsIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The retanning process is the main application of formaldehyde in the tanning industry since formaldehyde participates in two groups of synthetic organic tanning agents: syntans and resins. Resins can be hydrolysed with the result that formaldehyde is released. Thus, formaldehyde in leather can be free or from hydrolysis of resins. Due to the carcinogenic character of formaldehyde, its presence in leather should be avoided or should be below allowable limits. The EN ISO 17226 Standard is the Official Standard for the determination of formaldehyde content in leather, which, in the authors' opinion, presents certain ambiguities in the wording of some operations included in their analysis methods and, some of these operations, are susceptible of improvement. Therefore, a revision of the EN ISO 17226 Standard (Parts 1 and 2) is carried out in this work and, in particular, of the extraction phase of formaldehyde present in leather (possible use of alternative surfactant and shaking method) ; reaction time between the extracted formaldehyde with the dinitrophenyihydrazine solution (Part 1 of the Standard) and stability of the acetylacetone solution (Part 2 of the Standard).
- Il est peu soluble dans l'eau (13 à 20 g·l-1 à 20 °C) ;
- Il est miscible avec la plupart des solvants organiques ;

Volumétrie (chimie analytique)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The content of free fatty acids was investigated by qualitative and quantitative methods. The cable-extraction method was used to test six different types of leather sample in which the dichloromethane was as extraction agent. After the extract was methyl esterified it was again extracted by petroleum ether. Then the colour and titration method were used to quantitatively analyse the extract. Meantime, the effect of different decolourisation ways on the quantitative analysis was studied. The properties of extraction products were characterized by GC-MS. The results show that the main components of free fatty acids in leather are oleic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid and some linoleic acid. When the level of ethanol in the decolourising solution is 80% to 85% the effect is, overall, better. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES : Materials and apparatus
