Practical salt-free curing / J. B. Sladen in JOURNAL OF THE SOCIETY OF LEATHER TECHNOLOGISTS & CHEMISTS (JSLTC), Vol. 61, N° 1 (01-02/1977)
[article]

Water-treatment chemists have made use of various chemical reactions and biological processes to purify water from cations such as ammonium, magnesium and calcium, and common anions such as phosphates, nitrates and sulphate, but sodium cations and chloride anions are quite intractable, and pals through effluent treatment plants unchanged. There is therefore considerable pressure to limit the discharge of these ions anywhere inland in South Africa, so as not to raise the salinity of our main rivers. It is obvious that control of the discharge of sodium chloride itself is the very first step in limiting sodium and chloride ions. We can derive some idea of the potential salt run-off from this studv.Note de contenu : - Table 1 : South African abattoir, curer and tannery statistics 1975

SpécificationsIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : A review of consumer product recalls occurring in the EU clearly demonstrates that testing for and detection of chromium VI (crVI) in leather articles is currently a hot-button issue. Dr. Hudson reviews how the concerns surrounding restricted substances in consumer products continue to grow, and why the need to conform to legislation and brand specifications has become one of the most critical tasks within the leather supply chain. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Tanners of vegetable tanned leather have observed that when iron contacts moist or wet leather it causes gray to black stains. For years, the chelating agent, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), has been added to dry tannin extracts and to tanning liquors to prevent iron stains. This study was conducted to find out how much iron is present in tannins and in tan liquors and to find out how much iron, in the absence of EDTA, would be needed to cause iron stains. Analytical analyses and color determinations, using sheepskin skivers and colorimetry, showed that EDTA, an expensive chemical, did not need to be added during tanning and retanning of vegetable tanned leather.
Note de contenu : - I.
