Titre : Laminar fluid chaotic mixing in three-dimensional continuous flow domains Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : M. M. Overd, Auteur ; S. C. Generalis, Auteur Année de publication : 2001 Article en page(s) : p. 368-375 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Mixing and screw extrusion - Chaos is a relatively new subject in mathematical science. It has rapidly, however, found applications in a diverse range of areas in pure science and engineering. This work considers the application of chaos in viscous fluid mixing, fluids that are. for example, found in the food or polymer industry. It has been shown by many authors that under steady state conditions laminar fluids flow in a streamline motion. It has also been shown that it is possible to increase the degree of disorder in such a system by introducing time dependant moving boundaries. It is well established however, that chaotic motion is not dependent on the variation in streamline alone. The system is required to be operated within a specific range of boundary conditions for chaos to occur. This work presents further investigations of chaotic flow domains concentrating on a property that relates to the divergence and separation of particles originating from small generation zones within the flow domain. The property of divergence of particles is noted to yield conclusions consistent with previously published work in two dimensions. It is then applied to investigate the degree of disorder in three three-dimensional continuous chaotic systems, operating with a range of time and spatially periodic boundary conditions. In order to highlight the benefits of increased levels of mixing when operating the systems under specific conditions characteristic plots, for incremental variations of operating conditions, are presented. It is hoped that by the development of the characteristic plots and concepts presented here that engineers will be able to predict and characterise the degree of disorder in future industrial chaotic mixing equipment. Titre : Laser sintering of high temperature resistant polymers with carbon black additives Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : T. Wagner, Auteur ; T. Höfer, Auteur ; S. Knies, Auteur ; Peter Eyerer, Auteur Année de publication : 2004 Article en page(s) : p. 395-401 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Selective laser sintering (SLS) experiments with polyetherketone (PEK) and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) powders are described. The absorption behaviour of the polymer powders has been investigated with respect to the content of carbon black as an IR-absorber in the range from 0.03 to 0.1 wt.%. Laser sintering process studies have been carried out at room temperature using a Q-switched Nd: YAG laser system. The sintering depths of single layer substrates have been determined according to the process parameters, such as laser power, scanning speed and hatch distance. These process parameters have been optimised with the goal of achieving good structural integrity of the substrate. The influence of melt viscosity has been determined by comparing PEEK powders of low and standard melt viscosity. Scanning electron micrographs show the morphology of the original polymer powders and the laser sintered specimens. On the basis of the experimental results a qualitative SLS mechanism is proposed to describe the energy transfer from the carbon black particles to the surrounding polymer powder. Spectrométrie infrarougeIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : The aim of this work was to determine the environmental impact of a new biopolymer when fossil-based raw materials were replaced with protein derivatives, as compared with a standard acrylic resin. To this end, the life cycle assessment (LCA) of both products was conducted. In order to examine result variations due to data changes, sensitivity analyses were also performed by replacing the protein derivative with a polysaccharide derivative (PS).
Both products were characterised by IR, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and carbon-14 content. The new biopolymer was applied as a retanning agent and compared with a standard acrylic resin. Thickness, softness, physical resistance, colour intensity and fastness were assessed.
The LCA concluded that the use of protein-based products reduces the environmental impact in 17 of the 19 impact categories analysed. In particular, the carbon footprint was reduced by 47% versus the standard acrylic resin. On the other hand, replacing the protein derivative with a polysaccharide derivative increased all categories, thereby highlighting the impacts associated with the production of polysaccharides.
Our results show that fossil-based raw materials can be partially replaced with biopolymers that provide similar organoleptic characteristics. However, the use of biobased products does not imply a reduction of all the environmental impacts involved in LCA.Note de contenu : - Raw material and leather assessments
