But they also affect our scalp, a specific type of skin with a higher density of follicles and sebaceous glands than can be found on other parts of the body. Sebaceous glands, which produce large amounts of sebum, are important for the maintenance of epidermal barrier integrity. They carry antioxidants to the skin surface, the sebum they produce is a source of nutrients for the micro-organisms composing the microbiota, and give protection against solar irradiation. But when these glands are stimulated by environmental factors, they over-produce sebum, which can cause irritations, leading to itching, which in turn causes squames and additional irritation reactions, creating a vicious circle. Selecting the right UV filter combination to achieve broad spectrum protection, adjusting the use levels of each UV filter to reach the desired SPF (sun protection factor) while complying with all regulatory demands and providing sufficient stability to the formulation are only a few of the challenges.
And these are just the requirements for providing a sun care product, doing what it should do - protect the skin from UV radiation. The skin-feel and the textures for different application types have not yet been taken into consideration.
A sun care product with an SPF 30, matching all requirements and providing a comfortable skin-feel can easily contain 20 to 25 different ingredients.
Neo Heliopan® Flat1 (INCI : Homosalate, Octocrylene, Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Ethylhexyl Salicylate) offers a combination of UVA and UVB filters providing a broad spectrum protection from ultraviolet radiation. The blend uniformly absorbs solar radiation ranging from 300 to 360nm and therefore provides optimal protection against harmful UVA and UVB rays. The simple adjustment of the use level enables the manufacture of sunscreen products, such as lotions, creams, sprays and oils with sun protection factors from 6 to 50+ without the need to add additional UV filters.
The liquid blend is composed in a way that crystalline UV filters stay solubilised down to -20°C, which makes it also suitable for cold/ cold processes which save time and energy in the manufacturing process and avoids the handling of powdered UV filters.

Preservatives are defined as “substances which are exclusively or mainly intended to inhibit the development of micro-organisms in the cosmetic product”. Natural or synthetic ingredients, they are added to a wide range of products, from foods to pharmaceuticals, to prevent spoilage – whether from microbial growth or undesirable chemical changes. They are essential in personal care and cosmetic products to stop products being damaged by microorganisms and to protect the product from inadvertent contamination by the consumer during use.
Acting as the antibiotics of the cosmetic industry, they keep products from developing unsightly changes or spoiling, as well as protecting consumers themselves. Without them, cosmetics would have a much shorter shelf life, which would ultimately impact day to day skin care and beauty routines. For example, without preservatives, users could not take their favourite makeup or daily moisturising cream away on holiday with them. They also help to reduce the amount of packaging required, as they enable products to be sold as multi-use instead of single use doses.
To safeguard health and safety, there are stringent rules in place. The EU Cosmetic Regulation requires that all cosmetic products be safe for human health and preservatives within them must be listed on Annex V.1 Currently there are 60 preservatives on the EU list but only a limited number are in common use and many of those are facing regulatory review and uncertainty.

From daily life damage to sun exposure to product irritants, one thing is always needed: moisturisation. According to a 2020 survey published by Statistica, using data from a Simmons National Consumer Survey, 25.45 million Americans use a moisturiser on their face at least 14 times a week.1 With this type of constant usage, it is important for us to make sure the ingredients in our moisturiser are doing the proper job.
We need to moisturise. It keeps our skin hydrated and protected from the outside environment and all the daily struggles our body experiences. Moisturising is a crucial step in everyone’s skin care routine and is a staple that will only continue to prove its importance. The overall goal of moisturiser is to keep the skin soft, protected, and promote healthy skin elasticity.2 But what really is a moisturiser and what goes into it that allows our skin to feel soft and refreshed?
The key categories of moisturiser ingredients are emollients, occlusives, and humectants which can sometimes include others such as cationic surfactant/polymers and silicones. Moisturisers can coat the skin, limit transepidermal water loss, or attract water to the skin, making them an important ingredient in skin care. Emollients and occlusives can be added to creams, lotions, gels, and balms which allow our skin to experience greater benefits in multiple ways. It is no secret that the personal care sector, along with many others across the FMCG category, has seen its share of challenges. Of course, under turbulent market conditions, bottom line profit becomes king.
Often to achieve this, concessions are made in product formulation and sourcing. However, it is difficult to really enjoy a regularly undisturbed sleep of 7-9 hours per night.
A survey conducted among adults in 13 countries revealed that on average, people sleep 6.8 hours per weeknight and 7.5 hours per weekend night. Hence, the amount of sleep lost during the working week is not compensated over the weekend. Moreover, only 49% of adults are satisfied with their sleep.
The recent COVID-19 pandemic has only worsened our sleep quality. Another recent survey among US adults displayed that 98% have developed new sleep problems, and 68% feel it is harder to sleep even after measures were lifted.
