Dark circles and bags under the eyes are a common and universal aesthetic concern, which affects both men and women, regardless of age and ethnic origin. Although they are not of concern in terms of their effects on health, these conditions can be embarrassing and affect quality of life. They influence the overall appearance of the face, making it look tired, sad and older. They are therefore of significant cosmetic concern, especially for women.
The aetiology of dark circles and bags under the eyes is complex and multi-factorial. It combines intrinsic factors, such as ethnic origin or heredity, and extrinsic or lifestyle-related factors such as fatigue, lack of sleep, stress, smoking, excess alcohol consumption, hormonal changes, diseases, infections, allergies, etc.
Physiologically-speaking, there are the two main causes behind the appearance of dark circles and bags under the eyes: microcirculation and hyperpigmentation.
Microcirculation, or superficial microvascularisation in the eye area, is conducive to blood stagnation (or congestion) and dilatation, and is responsible for oedema, which is characterised by the collection of fluid in the tissue. A recent study showed an increase in dilatation of the blood vessels and the number of capillaries by videocapillaroscopy in subjects with persistent under-eye dark circles.1 These disorders are believed to be exacerbated by inflammation of the eye area.
Other secondary causes have also been described. The thin, transparent skin in the eye area could contribute to the visual appearance of dark circles as dilatation of the blood and hyperpigmentation can be seen more easily. In effect, compared to the rest of the face, the eyelid dermis contains less collagen, elastin and glycosaminoglycans.
The anatomy of the eye area itself is a contributing factor, as the bone structure can create a shadow effect. An effect which may be further accentuated by age-related or chronic photodamage-related skin slackening.
Oxidative stress could also play a role aggravating the appearance of dark circles, as blood vessel dilatation can lead to the release of heme and other metabolites into the tissue. Under oxidative stress, this leads to cytotoxic and proinflammatory effects, which are likely to exacerbate vasodilatation and hyperpigmentation.
Finally, bags are characterised even more by fluid collection and protrusion of fatty tissue in particular, which may be made worse by weakening of the septum as we age.
This article presents the studies that demonstrated the biological activity of avocado extract with high polyphenol content. This active ingredient, produced from avocado cake by extraction, comes in liquid form.
The effect of avocado polyphenols has been demonstrated by various in vitro biological models on the causes behind the formation of dark circles and bags under the eyes. These results were confirmed by two clinical studies which showed an effect from this active ingredient which corrected the appearance of dark circles and bags under the eyes.Note de contenu : - Activity on microcirculation

However, it is difficult to really enjoy a regularly undisturbed sleep of 7-9 hours per night.
A survey conducted among adults in 13 countries revealed that on average, people sleep 6.8 hours per weeknight and 7.5 hours per weekend night. Hence, the amount of sleep lost during the working week is not compensated over the weekend. Moreover, only 49% of adults are satisfied with their sleep.
The recent COVID-19 pandemic has only worsened our sleep quality. Another recent survey among US adults displayed that 98% have developed new sleep problems, and 68% feel it is harder to sleep even after measures were lifted. An additional survey showed that 60% of adults are interested in strategies to sleep better, what is known as biohacking sleep.Note de contenu : - A new tool to 'biohack' sleep

Poches sous les yeuxIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Eyes are an insight into a person's life and mind, often giving away what someone is thinking or feeling at any given moment. It is no wonder, then, that the eye area has long been a leading skincare concern among consumers. The global eyecare market is estimated to be worth up to S61.3million in 2020 and considerable annual growth of up to 6.4 % is predicted over the next 10 years.
The skin surrounding eyes is thinner than other areas and is more susceptible to signs of sleep deprivation, stress and ageing. Weakening collagen easily causes wrinkles in this area and damaged blood vessels are more visible, leading to dark circles.
Formats such as creams and serums that target these concerns have been commonplace on beauty shelves for many years, but in recent times the options available have considerably expanded to include masks, sticks and under-eye patches, among others. Eyecare products are a staple for any skin care routine, and can be found across all types of skin care range, from 100 % natural to science-driven cosmeceutical brands.
The actives used in these products are imperative to their function, and therefore need to have robust data behind them as well as being from appropriate sources to align with the product messaging. Using cutting edge biotechnotogical techniques, Aston Chemicals' partner Lipotrue has developed three eyecare actives from natural and synthetic sources, which help to reduce signs of ageing and sleep deprivation.Note de contenu : - iPeptide

Of the dark circle etiologies, blood stasis by poor-vascular integrity can cause darkening of the lower eyelid skin, which might be alleviated by reduced endothelial permeability. In this study, we investigated the effects of Salix alba bark extract (SABE) on the synthesis of hyaluronic acid (HA) in fibroblasts and vascular integrity protection from inflammatory cytokine. We also performed a clinical trial investigating the effect of SABE on dark circles.
- Methods : To confirm the effect of SABE on HA synthesis in human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs), we performed ELISA and real-time PCR. We investigated the interaction HDF-secreted substance with vascular integrity, and human dermal microvascular endothelial cells (HMEC-1) were treated with conditioned medium (CM) from HDF treated with or without SABE. Subsequently, we conducted a clinical study on 29 subjects by having them apply SABE containing cream for 8 weeks.
- Results : Salix alba bark extract treatment increased HA synthesis and regulated HMW–HA-related gene expressions in HDF. CM from SABE-treated HDF alleviated endothelial permeability and led to improved vascular integrity in HMEC-1 cells. Treatment with the cream containing 2% SABE for 8 weeks improved the parameters measuring dark circles, skin microcirculation and elasticity.
- Conclusion : Our results showed that SABE could protect against dark circles in vitro, and that topical treatment of SABE improved the clinical indexes of dark circles in a clinical study. Therefore, SABE can be used as an active ingredient for improving dark circles.Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : Preparation of Salix alba bark extract (SABE) - Cell culture and reagent - Hyaluronic acid enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) - RNA preparation and quantitative realtime PCR - Endothelial permeability assays - Preparation of cream - Clinical trial on dark circles
