OptiqueIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : Structural coloration is a quickly growing field, encompassing physical and photonic processes such as interference, diffraction, and scattering. In this study, we investigated the optical effects in the visible wavelength range, and in particular, the colour gamuts achievable with absorber–dielectric–metal sandwich structures. These chemical-free layered structures are highly tunable, easily scaled, optical cavities that are capable of generating remarkable colours whose properties are determined completely by material and structural parameters. We employed experimental and numerical strategies to demonstrate that each absorber spans a unique colour gamut, i.e. a subset of the full chromaticity space. While gamut overlap is observed between different absorber types, the gamut areas unique to each absorber occur at different hues of high excitation purity. A comprehensive understanding of how these colour gamuts develop and how different materials may be combined to expand larger subsets of the chromaticity space is required in order to maximize the variety of colours achievable with this system and elevate it into a ‘structural coloration technology’. Teinture -- Fibres textilesIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : Textiles coloration using extracts from the roots of various madder species (Rubia spp.) has been performed for centuries. To date, 68 anthraquinone colorants have been detected in Rubia spp. used to dye textiles. Many of these dyes are sensitive to hydrolysis and degradation from enzymes, extraction chemicals and processing temperatures, and are often overlooked as colorants in historical textiles. Conclusions in literature of the past 30 years concerning colorants present in planta and, particularly, in madder-dyed artefacts are being challenged as new analysis methods are developed. The recent advent of ‘soft’ extraction techniques has demonstrated that anthraquinone glycosides and other sensitive molecules, such as carboxylated compounds, need to be preserved; this valuable chemical information embedded in the dye structure may be lost if extraction and analysis is too harsh. Some compounds thought to be present in madder and madder-dyed artefacts are in fact degradation products resultant from the extraction process, and degradation pathways have been developed to better understand the reactivity and stability of these compounds. Detailed analysis of dyes in textile artefacts can reveal important cultural and heritage information concerning historical textiles relative to the specific dye species, the area of the world where this may have grown, how and where it was dyed, and, perhaps, where it was traded. Understanding the precise molecular structure of these dyes and their chemical reactivity is important to provide knowledge of their interactions with physical substrates, such as textile fibres, which could be used to develop superior techniques for analysis of artefacts. Teinture -- Fibres textiles synthétiquesIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : In earlier papers we have described sulphite-based and secondary amine-based resist printing of cotton using ink-jet procedures. This paper describes the chemical resist printing of polyester fabrics padded with disperse dyes to create a white image on a coloured background. Polyester grounds have been prepared by the pad-dry ‘dyeing’ of polyester fabrics with alkali-clearable disperse dyes, such as a Dianix PC (DyStar) or a Dianix SF (DyStar) dye, and subsequently ink-jet printed with sodium carbonate based ink formulations to yield a white image on a solid ground following high temperature steaming and appropriate wash-off procedures. Coloured images have been achieved by a two-step process whereby the coloured ground fabric was initially printed with an alkali-based ink and then overprinted in a second step with an illuminating ink formulation containing an alkali stable disperse dye, such as a Dianix AD (DyStar) or Serilene ADS (Yorkshire Chemicals).
Spectres d'absorptionIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : Based on the assumption that the unsymmetrical cyanine dyes can be regarded as a hybrid of the two corresponding symmetrical dyes it was expected that ?max of the unsymmetrical dye would be the arithmetic mean of ?max of the two symmetrical dyes. There is, however, often a remarkable difference between the arithmetic mean and the observed ?max of the unsymmetrical dye – the Brooker deviation. To date, this effect is explained in terms of increasing electronic energy differences. With increasing difference of the electronic structure between the ground and excited state, the difference between equilibrium geometry of ground and excited state increases and the relative intensity of the higher vibronic transitions 0–v increases and that of the 0–0 transition decreases. ?max represents the intensity maximum of an absorption band and could be related to the 0–0, 0–1 or another vibronic transition. We discuss the origin of the Brooker deviation on the vibrational structure of the spectra. Note de contenu : - Stationary electronic absorption spectra

Stabilité thermiqueIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : Pigment ink was formulated with nano-coated pigment dispersion, prepared via mini-emulsion polymerization. To study the effect of nano-coated pigment, surfactant and humectant on ink-jet printability, the trajectory of droplets with different pigment ink composition was monitored. The effect of ink formulation on the accuracy of printing process of the pigment ink was discussed by study on line width and edge contour of printed patterns. Experimental results indicated that the additives and properties of the pigment ink had a great influence on droplet formation and precise positioning of the printed patterns. The optimal composition for the pigment ink as following: nano-coated pigment dispersion was 20% w/w, surfactant (S-465) was 1.5% w/w, humectant (diethylene glycol) was 30% w/w and defoamer (FB-50) was 0.1% w/w. The prepared pigment ink exhibited excellent freeze–thaw, thermal and centrifugal stability. In addition, the optimal formula was beneficial to form a stable droplet and obtain high precision patterns. ViscoseIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : In this study, a novel process utilizing ozone was carried out for colour stripping of fabrics misprinted with reactive dyes in ink-jet machines. The results of ozone applications were compared with conventional colour stripping process performed by thiourea dioxide (TUDO) and soda ash. In trials, cotton-based and viscose-based woven fabrics were used as these fabrics were the most utilized at the textile mill in which this study was performed. Different ozone treatment times (30, 45, 60 or 90 min) were tested to find optimum process time and it was found that process times depended on fabric type. Particularly, colour stripping on high density and thick fabrics were harder than low density and thin fabric types. Fabric strengths, whiteness indexes and chemical oxygen demand (COD) values were measured. Also energy, chemical and water consumptions were calculated. Consequently, it was found that the reduction of the COD value of effluent was up to 98%. The calculations showed that the savings in time and cost in ozone treatment were up to 77%. Satisfactory colour stripping and tensile strengths were achieved. Note de contenu : - Process times - Whiteness indexes of the misprinted fabrics after different stripping treatments

Colour fastness of the photoresponsive fabrics to washing, wet cleaning, dry cleaning, rubbing and light was investigated. The CIELAB colour values of the fabrics before and after testing were measured using a reflectance spectrophotometer, and the colour differences were calculated to evaluate the fastness properties. The fabrics had better colour fastness to wet cleaning and washing than to dry cleaning. The fabrics showed higher colour fastness to wet than to dry rubbing. The photoresponsiveness of the fabrics decreased with prolonged exposure time to artificial light due to low photostability of the microcapsules. The heterocyclic dyes and benzo[a]phenazine-5,6-diones were characterized using 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and chemical ion (CI) mass spectrometry. Their spectral properties, such as absorption and emission spectra and fluorescence quantum yield, were also measured. Experimental results demonstrated that photolysis of benzo[a]quinoxalino[2,3-c]phenazine dyes in 2-propanol and cyclohexene oxide leads to dihydro derivatives. The same product is formed during irradiation of dye/iodonium salt photoredox pairs in monomers. These compounds absorb incident light at longer wavelength and act as in situ sensitizers. Thus, when a composition was irradiated with a xenon lamp through a 395 cutoff filter, higher conversion was achieved than under monochromatic light. With the microfading technique, developed to test the light fastness of a tiny test area on objects of cultural value, this comparison is made by absolute colour change after exposure. This article presents a new approach to enhance data interpretation of light-fastness tests by the use of the rate of colour change. The procedure is combined with the conventional classification process using absolute colour change. The new classification system with the rate of colour change was applied to 44 samples, 13 of them were classified in more sensitive Blue Wool categories when analysing the rate of colour change. The perspective of rate of colour change helps to enhance data interpretation especially of samples showing fading characteristics different from the light-fastness standards. Produits chimiques -- PurificationIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : Although tons of disperse dyes are used worldwile, little information on their ecotoxicity is available. While in silico models can be used to predict their ecotoxicity, experimental results from Daphnia can show significantly higher toxicity than predicted. Thus the objective of this work was to extend the knowledge base in this area by evaluating the ecotoxicity of three widely used disperse dyes and comparing the results to predicted values. Bearing in mind that generating ecotoxicity data on azo disperse dyes is complicated because they are not readily found as homogeneous compounds, we employed chromatographic methods to purify three commercially dyes C.I. Disperse Violet 93, Blue 291, and Blue 373 already found in the aquatic environment. No acute toxicity was observed for Daphnia similis. These results seems to be in general agreement when compared with ECOSAR predicted values. We hypothesize that differences in Kow values could explain the variations in results.
