(Expertox)

PhotochimieIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Photolysis experiments of chlorphenesin, used as a preservative in cosmetic products, were performed in aqueous solution and on a cream used in cosmetics. Three by-products resulting from the direct UV-visible photodegradation of chlorphenesin were characterized by chromatography (gas and liquid) coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS and LC-HR MS/MS) and found in both solutions. In vitro tests on Vibrio fischeri bacteria showed that the overall ecotoxicity of chlorphenesin increased with increasing irradiation time in both samples. In silico QSAR (Quantitative Structure Activity Relationship) tests were performed using T.E.S.T. (Toxicity Estimation Software Tool). Among the degradation compounds identified, 4-chlorophenol must contribute to the increased ecotoxicity of the photolyzed solution since the in silico LC50 estimated for all tests performed are always lower than those obtained for chlorphenesin. Produits chimiques -- ToxicologieIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Chlorinated compounds have been used for a range of applications in the tanning industry. These compounds are useful due to the excellent sanitation properties of the chlorine element and consist of a hydrocarbon chain with at least one covalently bonded chlorine atom.
Since the 1990s, environmental standards adopted by many countries globally have reduced and restricted the use of harmful chemicals during leather production. According to the European Environment Agency, chlorinated hydrocarbons are categorised as one of the most persistent environmental pollutants due to the highly stable C-Cl bond (which can be resistant to degradation). Therefore, many chlorinated compounds are restricted globally; however, their high environmental persistence means will remain detectable in the environment for years to come.Note de contenu : - Chlorinated phenols

LixiviationIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Chromium (III) is currently used in leather manufacture worldwide and the attention has been centered on the alleged environmental impact of chromium in leather waste. The effects of liquid-solid ratio, pH, contact time, rotational speed and temperature on the leachability of chromium from leather waste and the eco-toxicity were evaluated to investigate the ecological impact under environmental conditions. The characterization of leachate included the determination of total Cr and total organics (TOC), analysis of UV-visible absorption spectra, as well as the toxicity test with Photobacterium phosphoreum. The liquid-solid ratio, extractant pH, contact time and temperature significantly affected the leachability of chromium and toxicity of the leachate, whereas rotational speed slightly affected the leaching behavior when beyond 100 RPM. The toxicity of the leachate was related to both the amount of released substance which was mainly affected by contact time and liquid-solid ratio, and the species which was mainly affected by temperature and extractant pH. Finally, three samples from different tannery corresponding to leather waste were leached and characterized by total Cr, TOC and toxicity test under the environmental conditions of liquid-solid ratio 20:1(mL/g), pH 7.0, contact time 8 hours, rotational speed 100 RPM and temperature 25°C. These results contributed to the risk assessment of stacking field and waste management of chrome-containing leather. EcotoxicologieIndex. décimale : 668.1 Agents tensioactifs : savons, détergents Résumé : The production of normal paraffin from Gas to Liquids (GTL) plants provides LAB producers with a more cost-effective feedstock than normal paraffin extracted from kerosene. Test results to date demonstrate that the performance of GTL Normal Paraffin, and LAB and LAS derived from it, however, is equal to that of kerosene derived normal paraffin. Recent work has particularly focussed on the environmental performance of LAS produced from GTL Normal Paraffin. Detailed GC and NMR analyses confirm that there is little, if any, significant difference in the analytical "profiles" of the kerosene and GTL Normal Paraffin derived LAS samples. It is therefore not surprising that there is no difference in the biodegradability of kerosene and GTL Normal Paraffin derived LAS samples. All samples achieved > 60% mineralisation after 28 days (OECD 301B); all these data were consistent with previous biodegradability data for LAS from European Chemical Bureau (ECB) and Human & Environmental Risk Assessment (HERA) databases. Similarly, there is no difference in the ecotoxicity of kerosene and GTL Normal Paraffin derived LAS samples. Test results to fish (LC50), invertebrates (EC50) and algae (EC50) lay in the range 1–10 mg/l, 1–10 mg/l and 10–100 mg/l respectively; again these data are entirely consistent with previous ecotoxicity data for LAS from ECB and HERA databases.
