Additive optimizes dispersion / Michel Hourani in EUROPEAN COATINGS JOURNAL (ECJ), N° 12/98 (12/1998)

Titre : Additive optimizes dispersion Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Michel Hourani, Auteur Année de publication : 1998 Article en page(s) : p. 958-961 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In water-based decorative coating manufacture, amine choice can significantly impact formulation requirements and ultimately, the performance of the finished paint system. The functionality of the amine is of special importance. When used properly, a highly functional amine can reduce the amount of additives required, thus lowering formulation costs, while helping the finished paint achieve optimal performance. AMP-90, (2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol) offers such advantages. A low molecular weight amino alcohol, it possesses two primary functionalities; dispersion and pH neutralization. When used to its fullest capabilities, the additive produces a system with good scrub and water resistance, maximum hiding power, color acceptance and stability at lower anionic dispersant levels than are normally required to achieve such performance. Research shows that dispersant and wetting agent demand can be reduced by 25%, and coalescing aids optimized by 10%. Further, it demonstrates greater pH stability than ammonia and sodium hydroxide, while eliminating the safety and handling issues associated with these products. Tighter VOC regulations force formulators to produce low-viscosity resin systems that meet these demands without using volatile solvents. A unique diol modifying resin enhances the performance of 2-component polyurethane coatings and produces tougher and more resistant films. Low solids solvent-borne chemistries are vanishing rapidly. Water-borne and powder technologies are experiencing surprisingly high rates of growth. In particular, solvent-borne coating applications that can be accomplished with water-borne resins are rapidly moving toward this direction, even if they to do at somewhat higher costs.
Still, parts of the solvent-borne industrial coatings market continue to grow. In particular, both epoxy and polyurethane technologies are growing handsomely, principally at the expense of lesser chemistries such as alkyds of nitrocellulose. The higher performance sectors of the industrial polyurethane coatings market such as automotive and industrial maintenance coatings are projected to grow better than 5% per year.
Higher solids polyurethane systems are inherently more complicated to work with than their conventional solids counterparts. Their components are in more ultimate contact with each other xhich means higher viscosities and greater difficulties in spraying. It also means that these higher solids urethane coatings are much less tolerant to moisture contamination, either in the form of wet pigments or humid application environments.Note de contenu : - Effects of moisture upon polyurethane coatings

This molecule is unique in that it combines the high base strength of an amine with the low volatility of a dispersant and wetting agent. The application of this chemistry and the resulting improvement in performance properties and cost benefits will be presented.

Vernis bi-composantIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A 100% active diol modifying resin designed to enhance the performance of 2-component polyurethane coatings has been developed.
Polyurethane floor coatings require good abrasion resistance, hardness, chemical resistance and stain resistance. They also require good mechanical properties like tensile strength, hardness, ftexibility and tear resistance. A challenge for polyurethane coating formulators is to develop systems that meet these requirements with resin systems that have low viscosities without the use of volatile solvents.
A unique 100% active diol modifying resin designed to enhance the performance of 2-component (2K) polyurethane coatings has been developed. Four 100% non-volatile floor coating studies will be reviewed demonstrating the effect of modifying aromatic and aliphatic polyurethane systems. This diol modifying resin helps to produce films with higher tensile strength, elastic modulus, better abrasion resistance, higher hardness and improved chemical resistance versus the control formulations.Note de contenu : - PRIMARY HYDROXYL GROUPS AND REACTIVITY WITH POLYISOCYANATES
