The following polymers have been used: poly(N-vinyl caprolactame) (PVCL) of various molecular masses, poly(N-vinyl formamide) (PVFA), poly(i-propyl acrylamide) (PiPAA), copolymers of vinyl caprolactame with vinyl alcohol (CVCL-VA), ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose (EHEC), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) of various contents of acetyl groups and molecular masses. The wetting effect was observed only in the case of poly(vinyl alcohol) samples with residual contents of acetyl groups between 10 and 20%. These samples possess high surface activity and as a result show the stabilizing effect on CuPc dispersions. The data on the optical density of the CuPc aqueous dispersions with separated solid phase show that the most effective stabilizer of CuPc dispersions is PVA with 17% of CH,COO groups and molecular weight of 10,000-11,000. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The stability of aqueous dispersions of a rutile titanium dioxide pigment (TiO2) under ultrasonic treatment in the presence of such water-soluble polymers as poly(vinyl pyrrolidone), poly(vinyl alcohol), ethylhydroxy ethylcellulose was studied. Without polymers, the ultrasonic treatment of a dilute TiO2 aqueous dispersion results in a rapid complete reflocculation of the dispersion. In the presence of a given polymer, a stabilizing effect was observed, which depends on the nature of a polymer, its concentration and the duration of the ultrasonic treatment. It resulted in a reduction of a particle size and a more narrow particle size distribution. The TiO2 particles with preliminary surface treatment by oxides of Al, Si and Zr show higher dispersion stability in comparison with non-treated particles. Note de contenu : - The experiment
- Ultrasonic treatment causes the formation of fresh surfaces
- Different degree of degradation of the polymers causes different behaviour in the ultrasonic field
- Polymer adsorption on the pigment surface and creation of a stabilizing layer
- Inorganic treatment of the pigment surface is conductive to particle stabilization with polymersPermalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=11061

The data on the sedimentation behaviour of TiO2 dispersions in aqueous solutions shows that poly (vinyl methyl acetamide) (PVMA), poly (i-propyl acrylamide) (PiPAA) slightly increase dispersion stability at the early stages and then flocculation of pigment occurs. Complementary data on the dispersion stabilization with polymers obtained when studying accumulation of the dispersion sediment onto the cup of a torsion balance are shown. From those data effective particle radii were calculated. It was shown that in the presence of poly (vinylcaprolactame) (PVCL) the effective particle radius i.e. degree of agglomeration is considerably decreased that means stabilization of the dispersion.
