Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The minimum film formation temperature (MFFT) is the minimum drying temperature needed for a latex coating to coalesce into an optically clear, dense crack-free film. To better understand the interplay of forces near this critical temperature, cryogenic scanning electron microscopy (cryoSEM) was used to track the latex particle deformation and water migration in coatings dried at temperatures just above and below the MFFT. Although the latex particles completely coalesced at both temperatures by the end of the drying process, it was discovered that particle deformation during the early drying stages was drastically different. Below the MFFT, cracks initiated just as menisci began to recede into the packing of consolidated particles, whereas above the MFFT, partial particle deformation occurred before menisci entered the coating and cracks were not observed. The spacing between cracks measured in coatings dried at varying temperatures decreased with decreasing drying temperature near the MFFT, whereas it was independent of temperature below a critical temperature. Finally, the addition of small amounts of silica aggregates was found to lessen the cracking of latex coatings near the MFFT without adversely affecting their optical clarity. VernisIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Polymers were synthesized with a 1:7 or 1:8 ratio of acrylic acid to acrylate monomers to produce an acid-rich resin. The polymers were water-reduced and solvent-stripped to produce colloidal unimolecular polymers (CUPs). These particles are typically 3–9 nm in diameter, depending upon the molecular weight, and have different rheological behavior from micelles, polyelectrolytes, fullerenes, and latex particles, due to their charged surface and large surface areas. They were then formulated into ambient cure clearcoatings with aziridine crosslinking. These aziridine-cured acrylic CUPs were either solvent-free or very low VOC. The coatings were evaluated for their MEK resistance, adhesion, hardness, gloss, flexibility, wet adhesion, and abrasion and impact resistance properties. Surfaces fonctionnellesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Water repellent SiO2 particulate coatings were prepared by a one-step introduction of vinyl groups on the coating surface. Rough surface structure and low surface energy could be directly obtained. Vinyl functionalized SiO2 (vinyl-SiO2) spheres with average diameter of 500 nm were first synthesized by a sol–gel method in aqueous solution using vinyltriethoxysilane as the precursor. The multilayer SiO2 coating fabricated by dip-coating method was highly hydrophobic with a water contact angle of 145.7° ± 2.3°. The superhydrophobic SiO2 coating with a water contact angle up to 158° ± 1.7° was prepared by spraying an alcohol mixture suspension of the vinyl-SiO2 spheres on the glass substrate. In addition, the superhydrophobic SiO2 coating demonstrated good stability under the acidic condition. However, it lost its hydrophobicity above 200°C because of the oxidation and degradation of vinyl groups.
(Wikipedia)

Primaire (revêtement)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Magnesium-rich primers (MgRPs) are known to exhibit excellent corrosion resistance during natural weathering due to the formation of a controlled and complex cathodic protective layer which includes but is not limited to changing combinations of magnesium metal, magnesium hydroxide, and magnesium carbonate each during film formation, cure, and environmental exposure. Pretreating Mg powder with carbonic acid before incorporation into coatings has been shown to enhance the corrosion resistance of MgRPs. In an earlier study, the conditions for treating Mg powder and the effects of variables such as time and the order of addition were evaluated to determine optimized treatment conditions. In this study, the treatment process was analyzed further to better understand the nature of the carbonation process and the effect of treatment variables on the overall corrosion protection process. Coatings prepared with different ratios of treated and untreated Mg were evaluated via ASTM B117 salt fog exposure to determine the optimized ratio of treated and untreated pigments for maximum corrosion protection. Revêtements multicouchesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Reverse roll coating in which a thin single layer of liquid is applied onto a substrate has been used in industry for decades and has been extensively analyzed in the literature. Modern coatings, however, are often composed of more than one layer to improve the product performance and to reduce the manufacturing cost. Premetered methods such as slot, slide, and curtain coatings are typically used to produce such multilayer coatings. If the caliper of the substrate to be coated is not constant, then the coating gap and consequently the final film thickness deposited on the web will also be nonuniform. In this study, we focused on the use of reverse roll technique with slot die liquid delivery system to produce a uniform thin two-layer coating. The use of this coating technique to produce such a coating has not been previously explored. The liquid film surface as it is transferred from a rigid steel roll to a deformable urethane-covered roll was visualized to find out how the uniformity of the two-layer coating is affected by the speed ratio between two rolls, layers’ wet thicknesses, and liquid viscosities. The effect of these parameters on the ribbing frequency and amplitude was also investigated. The results show that in the two-layer coating, as in the single layer reverse transfer, there is a critical web speed above which ribbing occurs. The critical speed is determined by the bottom layer viscosity. Nanoparticles were incorporated into epoxy resin by mechanical and sonication processes. The state of dispersion, dissolution, and incorporation were characterized by optical microscopy, sedimentation tests, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. To investigate anticorrosive properties of nanocomposite coatings, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and salt spray tests were employed. The experimental results showed that epoxy cerium nitrate–MMT nanocomposite coatings were superior to the neat epoxy in corrosion protection effects. In addition, it was observed that the corrosion protection of nanocomposite coatings was improved as the clay loading was increased up to 4–2 wt% cerium nitrate. Revêtements poudre:Peinture poudreIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : To improve alkaline resistance, a newly mixed powder coating film using thermoplastic polyethylene terephthalate (PET) was investigated. Two kinds of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) and two kinds of polyamide (PA) were chosen as the secondary polymer. The melting temperatures (T ms) of these materials were lower than that of primary PET polymer so the mixed powder coating was able to form a dual phase film through a fluidized bed coating process. Microscope and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) observations revealed that the dual phase structure was indeed successfully formed and there was a secondary layer over the entire surface area of the film. This mixed powder coating film significantly enhanced the alkaline resistance to an environment filled with NaOH solution at 40°C in which a secondary material would be effective in protecting the film. With regard to both alkaline resistance and film formability, PET/PVB was superior to the PET/PA mixture. StyrèneIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Styrenated sucrose esters of soybean fatty acids were successfully synthesized and the coatings properties were found to be comparable to a commercial styrenated alkyd while having lower volatile organic content at comparable solids content. A series of reactions were performed which varied the percent styrene incorporated into the resin. The dry time was significantly reduced as the styrene content increased which was a result of having more hard polystyrene chain segments. Tack-free times of ?30 min were observed for resins containing high amounts of polystyrene. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy indicated residual bisallylic hydrogens were present which are capable of further crosslinking through autoxidation after film application. The addition of cobalt and zinc driers reduced the drying time which indicates that autoxidation is occurring. Furthermore, the styrenation reaction was extended to make water-reducible resins. These resins were crosslinked with a melamine–formaldehyde resin resulting in biobased thermosets having high solvent resistance, high hardness while retaining good flexibility. Surfaces fonctionnellesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The aim of this study is to fabricate a superhydrophobic antireflective (AR) coating that can be deposited on the covering of a solar cell system. First, AR coatings were synthesized on glass substrates with an average transmittance over 96% by layer-by-layer deposition of polyelectrolyte. Superhydrophobic sol gel was prepared by hydrolyzing tetraethoxysilane and then reacting it with hexamethyldisilazane. The sol gel, aged at 20°C for 96 h, was used to spin-coat a superhydrophobic film with a water contact angle of 163° and a transmittance of ~91%. The superhydrophobic sol gel was spin-coated on the top of an AR coating to form a superhydrophobic AR coating on a glass substrate. The average transmittance, advancing contact angle, and contact angle hysteresis of the superhydrophobic AR coating, which was spin-coated from sol gel aged for 96 h or 168 h, were 94.5 ± 0.7%, 154.0° ± 1.5°, and 15.4° ± 0.3° or 96.4 ± 0.2%, 158.4° ± 4.4°, and 1.8° ± 0.3°, respectively. Through a Taguchi design of experiment, the impacts of influencing parameters such as silane coupling agent to silica ratio, hydrolysis ratio as well as treating bath pH were investigated. The optimum condition in which the maximum percentage of modification occurred was observed at higher stoichiometric levels of silane:silica ratio and alkaline pH conditions. Furthermore, statistical analysis demonstrated that hydrolysis ratio was not very significant. Low amounts of turbidity of prepared hybrid coatings indicated that modified particles with higher grafting contents had better dispersion stability in the acrylate resin. The silicon compound of hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO), inactive gas argon (Ar), and toluene were used to impart surface hydrophobicity to a PU-based substrate. Surface hydrophobicity was analyzed by water contact angle measurements. Surface hydrophobicity was increased by deposition of compositions of 100% HMDSO, 3:1 HMDSO/toluene, and 1:1 HMDSO/toluene. Optimum conditions of 40 W, 30 s plasma treatment resulted in essentially the same initial contact angle results of approximately 100° for all three treatment compositions. The initial water contact angle for untreated material was about 73°. A water droplet took 1800 s to spread out on the plasma-treated sample after it had been placed on the sample surface. An increase in plasma power also led to a decrease in contact angle, which may be attributed to oxidization of HMDSO during plasma deposition. XPS analysis showed that plasma polymerization of HMDSO/toluene compositions led to a significant increase in atomic percentage of Si compound responsible for the hydrophobic surface. The easy clean results for the treated and untreated PU-based synthetic leather samples clearly showed that the remaining stain on the plasma-polymerized sample was less than that of untreated sample. The plasma-formed coating was both hydrophobic and formed a physical barrier against water and stain. For this purpose, hydroxyl-containing benzoxazine monomer was first prepared by conventional ring-forming reaction of phenol with paraformaldehyde in the presence of 6-amino-1-hexanol. The subsequent urethane reaction between PG and the benzoxazine monomer using toluene diisocyanate yields corresponding modified oil. The structures of the intermediates, and the modified triglycerides are confirmed by FTIR and 1H NMR spectral analysis. Thermally activated curing behaviors of the precursor and the modified oil in the absence of any catalyst were studied by differential scanning calorimetry. Thermal and film properties of the cured products were also investigated. Note de contenu : - Materials

Séparation (technologie)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A series of poly(trifluoropropylmethyl)-siloxane-block-polyurethane-urea (FSPUU) films is prepared through moisture curing based on a three-step process. First, prepolymers are produced from poly(tetramethylene oxide) and toluenediisocyanate. Second, the prepolymers are chain-extended by ?,?-bis(3-aminopropyldiethoxylsilane) poly(trifluoropropylmethyl)siloxane (APFS). Third, another chain extension is performed using 3,3?-dichliride-4,4?-diaminodiphenylmethane (DDDPM). The FSPUU films are characterized by Fourier transform IR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and mechanical testing. The effects of the APFS amount on the microstructure of the materials are also investigated. The results show that the material with approximately 15 wt% APFS exhibits high phase mixing. The materials display strong phase separations and weak tensile strengths when the APFS amounts range from 21.6 to 26.8 wt%. In particular, due to the incorporation of DDDPM in FSPUU, this segment increases the bonding of the different phases when the APFS amount is in the range of 35.6–44.5 wt%. The APFS segment is involved in compatibilizing the different phases in the materials. The tensile strength of the FSPUU films containing DDDPM can reach or surpass that of polyurethane. The copolymers may also have a functional application in coatings and adhesives. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Materials - APFS synthesis - Preparation of FSPUU elastomers - Characterizations

Résistance à l'abrasion
Revêtements:PeintureIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A traditional method of coating qualification, known as fingernail mar resistance, historically has been practiced in industry where the back of a fingernail is “flicked” across a coating surface. Any resulting permanent mark from this qualitative analysis is deemed a failure. Lack of quantitative analysis and control over experimental parameters in this type of test limits its utility as an analytical test. Fundamental understanding of this specific type of mar damage is hindered, and research efforts to find unique solutions based on changes in polymer structure are frustrated by the binary response of the test. In an attempt to rectify the situation, a high speed mar tester was developed to mimic and quantify the effects of the fingernail flick test. The work described in this report demonstrates the applicability of this tester to produce similar damage to that of the fingernail test. In addition, a quantitative method enabling differentiation of the degree of mar damage of different coatings is described. Finally, the method is demonstrated by differentiating mar resistance of coatings that show similar qualitative results in fingernail flick testing.
