A copolymer between tetrafluoroethylene and perfluoro-4-trifluoromethoxy-1,3-dioxole (AD60) and two perfluoropolyether containing ammonium phosphate (F10) or triethoxysilane (S10) functionalities have been tested. To estimate the color alteration of the anodized titanium surfaces due to the application of the coatings, spectrophotometric analyses have been made. Water and n-dodecane contact angles as well as apparent surface energy have been evaluated. Ellipsometry and atomic force microscopy data have been used to measure the thickness of the fluorinated coatings. A tailored mechanical preliminary test has also been explored to evaluate the adhesion of the coatings on the anodized titanium surface. The resistance to surface soiling with castor oil was also preliminarily investigated. The fluorinated coating tested on anodized titanium showed a low apparent surface energy and high chromatic aspect conservation, this is particularly evident for the titanium anodized coated with triethoxysilane functionalities fluoropolymers S10. Revêtement de céramiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : An electrochemical method of fabrication of (NiCoCrAlY)/MgO/yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) multilayered coating was proposed. This multilayered coat is expected to work as a thermal barrier coating for nickel superalloy substrates. The (NiCoCrAlY) layer was deposited using the electrophoretic deposition technique, the MgO layer was deposited by the electrolytic deposition technique and the YSZ layer was electrophoretically deposited. The process of depositing (NiCoCrAlY) alloy particles revealed that the electrophoretic technique can be used for particles with submicron dimensions. The MgO intermediate layer was introduced to accommodate the difference in thermal expansion coefficient between the YSZ ceramic and the NiCoCrAlY metal layers. Spectroscopie d'impédance électrochimiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The purpose of this investigation was focused on reducing the content of zinc phosphate in anticorrosive paints by means of the incorporation of low quantities of selected soluble corrosion inhibitors. The article describes the anticorrosive behavior of alkyd paints containing reduced levels of zinc phosphate, zinc oxide, and some soluble compounds used as additives (e.g., sodium polyphosphate, sodium phosphate, and sodium benzoate). Anticorrosive solventborne alkyd paints were formulated with a zinc phosphate content of 10% by volume (v/v) with respect to the total pigment concentration. In all cases, the PVC/CPVC (pigment volume concentration/critical pigment volume concentration) ratio was 0.8. Experimental paints, applied on sandblasted SAE 1010 panels, were evaluated by accelerated tests (salt spray cabinet) and electrochemical measurements (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, EIS). The results show that the additions of small amounts of soluble corrosion inhibitors to low content zinc phosphate paint formulations enhance their performance in a very remarkable way. Perhaps, the most outstanding feature is that the employment of soluble additives allowed the reduction of the zinc phosphate content with concomitant savings. Spectroscopie d'impédance électrochimiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is used to derive an expression for predicting the service life of organic coating in a C4-type environment (industrial and costal areas with moderate salinity) as defined in ISO 12944 standard for paints and varnishes—corrosion protection of steel structures by protective paint systems. Three coating systems with a record of 2, 5, and 10 years of durability were selected for the study. The selection was also based on proven composition and dry film thickness (DFT) of the coatings as per ISO 12944. Electrochemical impedance measurements of the paint-coated panels were carried out by exposing the coated mild steel panels without scribe in different corrosive environments such as immersion in NaCl solution, neutral salt spray, etc. Neutral salt spray exposure was found to be the most severe corrosive environment among all the three coating systems. In most of the cases, EIS gave early indication of coating failure when compared to visual defects such as blistering and over-film corrosion. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL :

Revêtements en phase aqueuse:Peinture en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Core–shell theory presents a new easy method to obtain high performance, economic, and eco-friendly anticorrosive mixed pigments. The core–shell pigments in this work are prepared by depositing a surface layer of an expensive efficient anticorrosive pigment (phosphates) on a bulk of less expensive extender pigment (alumina). The combination of these two compounds led to the production of new pigments with improved properties different from each of its individual components; and consequently these improved properties led to changing the efficiency of protection properties of paint films containing these new pigments. The new pigments were characterized using XRD, SEM, TEM, and EDAX analysis to elucidate their structure and prove the presence of phosphate ions on the surface of alumina. These pigments were also evaluated according to ASTM measurements. Then they were incorporated in three groups of emulsion paint formulations based on styrene acrylic emulsion copolymer, and comprising different concentrations of Zn, Mg, and 1Zn·1Mg phosphates/alumina core–shell pigments; in addition to a control formulation free of these pigments, to evaluate their efficiencies in anticorrosive paints for protection of cold-rolled steel. Chemical, physical, and mechanical measurements were carried out, besides corrosion resistance tests and weight loss of steel panels under paint films which were determined in 5% NaCl solution for 28 days. The results proved that the prepared formulations containing the prepared pigments could protect steel efficiently from corrosion compared to the control specimen. Groups II and III containing higher weight percentages of prepared pigments showed the best performance in corrosion protection, and the best performance among these two groups was paint films containing magnesium phosphate/alumina pigments.
Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The effect of alumina and silica nanoparticles on mechanical, optical, and thermal properties of UV-waterborne nanocomposite coatings was investigated. The addition of nanoalumina and nanosilica was shown to decrease the hardness because of nanoparticle aggregation. In comparison to the neat coating and despite the presence of aggregates, the scratch resistance of nanocomposite coatings was significantly improved. As expected, the gloss of UV-waterborne coatings was reduced following the addition of nanoparticles due to an increase of the surface roughness. Alumina and silica nanoparticles were found to enhance the glass transition temperature of PUA nanocomposite coatings by hindering the mobility of macromolecular chains at the interface around the nanoparticles. Finally, the interest and efficiency of grafting trialkoxysilanes was demonstrated with the study of nanosilica behavior. Not only was the dispersion of nanosilica enhanced following trialkoxysilanes grafting onto silica nanoparticles, but also the scratch resistance and the adhesion of UV-waterborne coatings containing nanosilica markedly increased even with 1 wt% content. Silica which is recommended in the wooden furniture and kitchen cabinet manufacturing industry as nano-reinforcement provides improved properties well suited in surface coating applications to efficiently protect surface of wood substrates. UV-curable surface coatings are widely used because of their excellent properties and because they are environmentally friendly products. In this study, immobilized Candida antarctica lipase B was used to catalyze formation of liquid wax esters, such as adipate esters, via a solvent-free process. The adipate esters formed were then used as UV-curable reactants in the wood coating formulations, consisting of epoxy acrylate, additives, and a photoinitiator. The performance of the products was evaluated by coating them onto glass tiles (using gel content, hardness, and scratch resistance tests) and wood panels (using adhesion, impact, and heat resistance tests). The coated film from this formulation performed well during the evaluation tests. The gel content exhibited more than 90% polymerization, while the pendulum hardness gave a value of 55.25%. Both analyses were significant in determining the effect of irradiation cycles. A scratch test was also carried out to verify the resistance of the coating. The maximum weight load which can be resisted by the wax esters formulation is 4.5 N. Note de contenu : - Materials

The titanium boride (TiB) reinforcing phase was formed in situ in the clad layer during the cladding process. Since the TiB and tungsten (W) reinforcing phase exist in the clad layer, the hardness of the clad layer is double that of the substrate. Wear test results reveal that the tribological performance of the WB-clad layer is superior to that of the Ti–6Al–4V substrate. A linearly increasing scratch normal load was applied during scratch to induce progressively increased delamination stress at the coating and steel substrate interface. Thus, the applied critical load to cause coating debonding can be experimentally determined. To find out the corresponding stress magnitude to incur coating debonding, finite element methods (FEM) modeling was conducted to analyze the stress fields around the scratch tip during scratching. The wet-adhesive strength is then quantitatively determined. Based on the above methodology, investigation on a set of model coating systems suggests that the critical load for coating delamination is significantly influenced by water exposure time, coating thickness, and substrate surface roughness. By combining the standardized scratch tests and FEM modeling, the proposed approach is found to be effective for quantitative assessment of epoxy coating wet-adhesive strength and for the development of high performance protective coatings for various industrial applications. Wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) was employed to investigate the effect of processing time on degree of delamination of clay platelets. In order to evaluate the effect of ultrasonication time on transport properties of the PU/OMMT composites, diffusion coefficient and maximum water uptake were determined through a water permeation test. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was carried out to analyze the barrier properties and to evaluate the corrosion performance of these composite coatings on carbon steel panels. It was found that by increasing sonication time, the barrier property of nanocomposites against diffusion of water molecules was improved. This is due to further separation of clay platelets and enhancement of the traveling pathways for water molecules. Note de contenu : EXPERIMENTAL

Revêtements multicouchesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this study, we describe a new technique for creating dense, stable, nanolayer coatings on solid substrates using ultrasonic nebulization. Nebulization-assisted layer-by-layer assembly (LbL) is a modification to the well-characterized LbL assembly method. The conventional method of producing electrostatically assembled multilayer films through sequential substrate dipping was compared to the nebulization method, and the resultant film characteristics were investigated. Varied coatings can be generated according to the alterations in deposition parameters, with the most influential being nebulizer distance and time. In addition to employment of polyelectrolytes (PEs), the nebulization method has been extrapolated to generate assemblies containing nanoparticles and a model drug, dexamethasone. It is shown that in comparison with conventional LbL, similar bilayers’ layering thicknesses can be achieved within a much smaller timeframe. Furthermore, PEs and more complex protein and nanoparticle assemblies can be incorporated to influence the surface topography and functionality. The potential to expeditiously assemble multicomponent films has far-reaching implications in many focus areas. Revêtements multicouchesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Nano-structured superhard coatings represent the state-of-the-art in the rapidly increasing worldwide market for protective coatings. In this study, the combination of nano-composite and nano-multilayered structures into the same coating was attempted. Nano-multilayered coatings of TiN/TiSiN and CrN/CrSiN were deposited on tool steel substrates by closed-magnetic-field unbalanced DC magnetron sputter ion plating. The coating structures were characterized using X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Mechanical characterizations were performed including nano-hardness measurement, progressively-increasing-load scratch test, and wear test. TiN/TiSiN coatings have a nano-hardness of 40.2 GPa, whereas CrN/CrSiN coatings have a hardness of 30.9 GPa. TiN/TiSiN coatings also showed a higher critical failure force and scratch fracture toughness as well as better wear resistance and lower acoustic emission signal, indicating less total damage to the coatings. Revêtement métalliqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Ti:Cu3N thin films were deposited on Si(111), quartz, and glass slide substrates by DC magnetron sputtering in molecular nitrogen ambient. The structural properties of Ti:Cu3N thin films were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. XRD measurements show diffraction band with peaks close to the (100) and (200) diffraction lines of cubic anti-ReO3 structure of Cu3N. The Ti:Cu3N nano-crystalline size is in the range 22–27 nm. Lattice constant expansion reflects Ti incorporation causing the excess nitrogen to occur. Surface morphology shows that the N richness suppresses the grain growth. The optical absorption spectra indicate a remarkable shift to higher energies of the absorption edge due to higher N concentration and quantum size effect. Photoluminescence (PL) measurement shows interstitial N excess and Ti impurity produce shallow and deep levels, respectively. Thermal stability of the Ti:Cu3N films annealed at 300 and 400°C is improved in comparison with that of Ti free Cu3N films.
