A series of high molecular weight cationic polyacrylamides were prepared with N-(2,4,4-trimethylpentan-2-yl)acrylamide, acrylamide and methacryloxyethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride by copolymerization using complex initiation systems as catalysts in aqueous solution. Then they used as flocculants to treat the paper-making wastewater. The removal of the colour and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) in the treated waste water samples were determined. Results showed that flocculants could efficiently remove the color and the COD. The overall color and COD removal efficiencies reached as high as 80% and 85%, respectively.

Hexamethyldisiloxane was used as a siloxane precursor for the atmospheric plasma deposition of siloxane coatings on substrates of three different categories: paper, polyethylene-coated paper, and textile materials (woven cotton fabric and polypropylene nonwoven). SEM, H2O contact angle measurements, heat sealability, and water vapor barrier measurements were carried out to characterize the composition and surface structure of the samples. The potential of the method and the equipment was shown by the coatings, ranging to micrometer scale. With selected samples, hydrophobic coating was shown to form at speeds up to 100 m/min. Qualitative tests indicate that the tannins of cashew nut kernel husks are mainly condensed type while those of groundnut husks are mixed tannins. UV spectra of the tannins implied that ellagitannins was present in the groundnut husks whereas the tannins of cashew nut husks contain cyanidin, quercetin, and delphinidin, among others. Chromatographic separation of the hydrolysed tannins also detected other components. Quantitative determination showed about 19.9 - 22.1 percent tannins in the husks of cashew nut and about 5.7 - 7.5 percent tannins in the husks of groundnut. Potential applications of the extracts as tanning and re-tanning agents in the production of shoe upper leathers have also been investigated. Thompson, Auteur Année de publication : 1998 Article en page(s) : p. 230-233 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Tags : 'Pâte papier' Fabrication 'Vieux Désencrage Encre Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The pressures to recycle paper waste are great and are likely to increase. The search continues for better methods of de-inking, dispersing and collecting inks during fibre reclamation. Meanwhile new printing technologies are bringing new inks and presenting new challenges to the recycling technologist. The development and application of chemicals to overcome de-inking problems increase running costs. The development and addition of new plant increase capital costs ; these must be paid for. Additional chemical and mechanical operations degrade the fibre and reduce the number of times it may be recycled. No solution is perfect. However, perhaps costs could be reduced and the job of the recycling technologist mode easier if collaboration with ink manufacturers devising new ink formulations was made the norm.
