Tannage Résumé : Among the novel collagen crosslinkers currently being studied, polyepoxides (e.g. based on aliphatic polyol glycidyl ether), have shown certain potential in organic tannage applications. The work reported here is a comparison of the tanning abilities of some commercial epoxides with commonly used organic tanning agents, i.e. glutaraldehyde, oxazolidine and THPS. Studies have been based on the progress of tannage followed via crosslink density determination of treated gelatine (i.e. used as a collagen model). The investigation has also been concerned with comparing the physical, chemical, biological and morphological characters of the resultant leather.
The results show that the order of tanning ability to be: THPS > oxazolidine > glutaraldehyde >> epoxide. Epoxide, when used alone, is a fairly weak crosslinker of collagen and has to be used in relatively large quantities (an offer of 20% of skin weight). The epoxide has a slow reaction rate at room temperature and the resulting leather has lower hydrothermal stability (82°C) with a lower reacted amine content and tensile strength. However, this epoxide treated leather has high apparent density, moisture content and anti-trypsin degradation ability. The differences in tannage mechanisms for these reagents are discussed, in order to interpret the limitations of this type of epoxide.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE : Leather characterisation methods

Note de contenu : - PROTOCOLE EXPERIMENTAL : Matériaux - Méthodes

Test d'immersionIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Recently, magnesium (Mg) and its alloys have attracted more attention because of their biodegradability and fascinating mechanical properties in the medical field. However, their low corrosion resistance and high degradability in the body have a great effect on mechanical stability and cytocompatibility, which hinders its clinical applications. Therefore, here we introduce a bifunctional composite coating composed of polycaprolactone and synthesized hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (HA-NPs) loaded with simvastatin deposited on the AZ31 alloy via electrospinning technique. The synthesized HA-NPs and composite nanofibers layer were characterized using TEM, FE-SEM, FTIR, and XRD to understand the physiochemical properties of the composite nanofibers compared to pristine polymer and bare alloy. Corrosion resistance was evaluated electrochemically using potentiodynamic polarization and EIS measurements, and biodegradability was evaluated in terms of pH and Mg ions release in SBF solution. The as-prepared coating was found to retard the corrosion and increased the osteocompatibility as resulted in cell culture test, a higher cell attachment and proliferation on the implant biointerface, in addition to releasing simvastatin in a controlled platform. Transition vitreuseIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Cysteamine functionalised reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was grafted to polypropylene-graft-maleic anhydride (PP-g-MA) and subsequently melt blended with PP. The covalent bridging of rGO to PP-g-MA via the cysteamine molecule and co-crystallization are routes to promoting interfacial interactions between rGO and the PP matrix. A rheological percolation threshold was achieved for a nanofiller loading between 3 wt% and 5 wt%, but none detected for the composites prepared with un-functionalized rGO. At low loadings (0.1 wt%), functionalized rGO is well dispersed in the PP matrix, an interconnecting filler-filler, polymer-filler and polymer-polymer network is formed, resulting in increased tensile toughness (1 500%) and elongation at break (40%) relative to neat PP. Irrespective of whether the rGO was functionalised or not, it had a significant effect on the crystallization behavior of PP, inducing heterogeneous nucleation, increasing the crystallisation temperature (Tm) of PP by up to 10°C and decreasing the crystalline content (Xc) by ∼30% for the highest (5 wt%) filler loading. The growth of the monoclinic a-phase of PP is preferred on addition of functionalised rGO and b crystal growth suppressed. Note de contenu : - Materials
