RhéologieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : During roll coating application of water-based architectural paints, fibers are formed between roller and substrate. These fibers progressively thin and break up into several tiny droplets leading to the wastage of paints. This defect is widely known as spattering. In the current study, the propensity to spatter in fully formulated mid pigment volume concentration water-based architectural paints based on varying the type of thickeners, namely a combination of cellulosic with clay, cellulosic, and hydrophobically modified poly acetal/ketal polyether (HMPAPE), at similar and varying volume solids is investigated. The spatter tendency of paint is qualitatively assessed using ASTM D4707. Also, a new approach to quantify the spread area of spattered droplets is developed by thresholding-based image segmentation using an image processing toolbox of Mathematica. This newly developed quantitative approach will greatly help the formulator to better differentiate between formulations. Rheological tests, namely viscosity curve, amplitude sweep, frequency sweep, and first normal stress difference test, are carried out to unravel the flow and viscoelastic properties of paints in depth. An in-house custom-built fiber drawing device on a contact angle drop shape analyzer instrument is fabricated to study the extensional properties of paints. At the same volume solids, the paint based on a combination of cellulosic with clay thickener spatters the most, while the paint based on HMPAPE thickener spatters the least. This is mainly attributed to the chemistry, molecular weight, and thickening mechanism of thickeners. Eventually, a reliable correlation is established between observed spatter and the frequency-dependent elastic modulus outside the linear viscoelastic range at the same and varying solids for paints based on the different types of thickener. This correlation will help chemists to quickly screen formulations to minimize the spattering during roll coat application, thus saving time, cost, and manpower. VertIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : Diamond Green G (CI 42040, Basic Green 1) is a triarylmethane dye mostly employed in the industrial dyeing of miscellaneous natural and artificial textile fibres, in the production of printing inks and as an anti-fungal agent for aquaculture products. Diamond Green (DG) tends to fade under light irradiation, similar to several other dyes and pigments belonging to the triarylmethane family. In this paper, an in-solution degradation study was carried out to shed light on DG photostability. The experiments were performed by artificially irradiating DG in water and dimethyl sulphoxide, and analysing aliquots sampled at different time intervals by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with diode array detector quadrupole and time of flight tandem mass spectrometry. The degradation products formed were characterised and the product-ion spectra discussed and interpreted. On the basis of the structure of the identified compounds and their kinetic trend in relation to the accelerated ageing time, degradation mechanisms were proposed for DG, taking into account the role played by the solvent. Finally, the dyeing formulation of an historical textile sample, collected from a stage costume worn in a Zeffirelli lyric opera, was determined utilising the information collected from the analysis of irradiated DG solutions. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the synthesized HNT revealed that many of the nanotubes were tubular; however, spherical and semi-spherical, platy and semi rolled structures were also observed. Fire retardant EPDM compounds composed of typical flame retardants (FR), deca-bromo diphenyl oxide (DBDPO), antimony oxide (Sb2O3), talc and carbon black were prepared. Three elastomer compounds, with 5, 10 and 20 wt.% of synthesized HNT, and one more compound with 10 wt.% of synthesized HNT and 10 wt.% of conventional flame retardants were prepared and formed by a two roll mill. A TEM micrograph was presented to prove the well dispersion of HNT in polymer matrix. The flammability, thermal stability and tensile strength of the compounds were compared to that of typical fire retarded EPDM. The results showed that the typical flame retardants diminish the tensile strength and elongation at break of EPDM elastomers; in addition, these compounds showed the lowest thermal stability among the typical formulations. The extent of flammability of the compounds was characterized using the cone calorimetry technique. The compound containing 5 wt.% HNT showed the highest tensile strength, the least flammability and the highest thermal stability compared to the other compounds. This was related to the good dispersion and also on the tubular structure of the synthesized nanotubes. The peak of heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release (THR) as well as the amount of hazardous gas emission for the sample having the highest mechanical response was smaller than those with conventional micro-filler flame retardants. ToxicologieIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In this study, the hazardous, substances in finished chrome-tanned leather and in leachates were determined and evaluated based on ISO or national standards, and the overall toxicity toward Photobacterium phosphoreum of the leachates was assessed. No restricted hazardous substances, such as Cr(VI), Hel-40 and carcinogenic dyes in leathers exceeded the thresholds proposed in the criteria for eco-label leather products. Chrome leathers were then leached with deionized water with a solid/liquid ratio of 1:20 to simulate rainwater leaching, and the heavy metals as well as organic compounds in leachates were analysed by ICP-OES, spectrophotometry, and GC-MS. The total chrome, Cr(VI) and TOC in the leachates of leathers were about 2.6-2.8, 0 and 237-277mg/L, repectively, and the low contents of hazardous substances in leachates showed that leather should net be considered as toxic waste when discarded. However, the biotoxicity assays of the leachates from leathers showed quite a high luminescence inhibition rate of about 97-98%, suggesting a hazard to aquatic organisms. Though the leachable chrome showed the greatest concentration in general, the toxicity of leachates seems complicated and further studies are needed. MélangeIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this manuscript, a method to reduce superelevations of lateral edges in cross-web direction during slot die coating of shear-thinning slurries for Li-ion battery electrodes (LIB) was developed. Therefore, the impact of the inner slot die geometry on the edge elevations was investigated. These elevations of the coating could be almost eliminated by optimizing the flow profile at the outlet of the slot die by modification of the internal geometry. This adaption is an essential step in optimizing the coating quality of slot die coating for battery electrodes to significantly reduce coating edges and, hence, the resulting production reject during the coating step of the industrial roll-to-roll process. It was also shown that lateral edges of the coating can be influenced explicitly by process parameters such as volume flow and gap between slot die and substrate. This correlation has already been shown for other shear-thinning material systems in previous works, which is now confirmed for this material system. At the beginning, the influence of different internal geometries on the formation of the edge elevations was shown. Finally, for the shear-thinning electrode slurry used in this work, optimal dimensions of the previously determined inner geometry for the slot die outlet were found. The optimization was performed for a state-of-the-art electrode area capacity (approximately 2.2 mAh cm−2). The results enable a significant reduction of defects and reject in the coating step of large-scale production of LIB electrodes in the future, adding to a more sustainable battery production.
