The body of the paper is concerned with the coating used on a hull of a ship to prevent the accumulation of barnacles and other fouling. The most effective antifouling paint now being used contains toxins and will be forbidden by international regulations within eight years. The ideal replacement will be a nontoxic material that resists the attachment of marine life and encourages the organisms to fall off the ship. This paper describes laboratory and field work during the past 18 years on a variety of fluorinated coatings and silicone coatings with these properties and criteria for formulating successful nontoxic coatings. Silicone and fluorinated coatings frustrate fouling by different mechanisms, and thus the criteria for a successful coating are distinct in important ways. The method was studied to minimize the waste produced by the elimination of the decomposable paint film. This was performed in two steps: a dipping in aqueous solution containing solvents and acids, and a successive wash with solvents. Decomposition of the crosslinking bonds and the elution of the decomposed free crosslinker took place in the first dipping process, and the elimination of the decomposed resins in the second washing process. The aqueous solution could be used for a long time without contamination by the decomposed resins, and the decomposed resin could easily be recovered from the resin solution containing no other contaminants. We obtain expressions for the melt curtain shape, coating thickness, contact length, contact pressure, drawing force, apparent contact angle, and contact convexity. Specially constructed examples enable practitioners to apply the results without advanced training in fluid mechanics. We identify a process indeterminacy that arises in curtain coating employing a parallel slit. We show that, with a rapidly converging extrusion slit, this indeterminacy vanishes. Thus, a unique solution for the contact length is always obtained. The extension to a viscoelastic fluid is also briefly considered. In measuring coating VOC content, separate methods for determining exempt solvents are required. One such method utilizes solid-phase microextraction (SPME) to sample the headspace of solvent-based coatings to which the surrogates acetone-d6, methyl acetate-d3, and/or metachlorobenzotrifluoride have been added. The sampled exempt coating solvents are thermally desorbed and analyzed using gas chromatography with flame ionization or mass spectral detection. The SPME headspace method has also been used to analyze MEK, butyl acetate, tert-butyl acetate, toluene, and xylene in solventborne coatings, and alcohols in waterborne systems. This paper presents the results obtained for acetone and toluene in a large number of aerosol paints. Additionally, the results from a round-robin study for acetone, methyl acetate, and parachlorobenzotrifluoride in commercial solvent-based coatings are reported.
