Four different latexes, consisting of homogeneous and composite particles as well as mixtures of different particles, were studied. The atomic force microscope proved to be an appropriate tool to reveal the surface structure of the films under ambient conditions. One result was that the gloss of the paint film is strictly correlated to the surface roughness of the corresponding pure latex film. With the exception of one example, the study revealed that solvents needed to prepare a varnish tend to reduce the surface roughness. The paper also consists of application of surfactant in aqueous coatings & selection of the proper surfactant. The paper also consists troubles faced during selection of proper surfactant. This paper also covers the H.L.B.(Hydrophilic lipophilic balance) value, which is an indication of the solubility of the surfactant & its determination. Note de contenu : - Structure of surfactant

There is an increasing tendency in the market to reduce
or eliminate use of solvents in decorative coatings.
Waterborne latex paints, using raw materials from petrochemical resources, have largely replaced conventional solventborne alkyd resins in wall paints. For wood and metal protection however, alkyd resins remain the preferred binders, for their excellent protective properties and appearance.
Even today, almost half of the European resin production for surface coatings consists of alkyd resins, despite the pressure from more 'modem' binder technologies like waterborne acrylic latexes or polyurethane dispersions.
Strong arguments remain to predict a bright future for alkyd resins in surface coatings :
Performance. Alkyds combine cost effectiveness with unique formulation, application and dry film properties that cannot be achieved with other resin types. Moreover, alkyds offer good pigment wetting, good penetration in porous substrates and excellent chemical resistance. This technology is easy to apply and gives high gloss finishes.
Sustainability. A resin technology that is already using a large fraction from renewable, non-petrochemical raw materials. Alkyd resins can be formulated easily with up to 75% of raw materials coming from natural resources I.
Legislation. The Decorative Paints directive 2004/42/CE, limiting the use of volatile organic compounds (VOC) in decorative paints and automotive refinish paints sets the targets in Europe. The directive defines maximum levels of solvents with a boiling point <250°C for a variety of coating categories and differentiates between solventborne and waterbome formulations. It is an example for voluntary schemes and legislation being implemented or prepared all over the world.Note de contenu : - STRATEGIES FOR VOC REDUCTION OR ELIMINATION : High solids alkyds - The water in oil approach - Water-reducible alkyds and urethane alkyds hybrids - Externally emulsified alkyd resins
