In the quest for wealth and comfort, man has ignored natural laws and thus has disturbed a number of natural cycles, resulting in environmental pollution and health hazards. Environmental degradation is linked with industrialization. Surface coating industries, being a specific case of raw material intensive industries use a large number of ingredients, whose harmful effect on man and environment are not spelt out in unambiguous terms. To maintain the ecological balance, adequate steps are being taken now to reduce the huge amount of emission of volatile organic compounds (VOC), used as solvents/ thinners by paint industries, which, otherwise, can pollute the neighboring environment significantly. In the present paper, control on VOC content using different methods has been discussed. Adoption of new coating technologies such as water borne coatings, high solids coatings, powder coatings, radiation curable coatings and electrodeposition coatings reduces the VOC emission to a great extent. Therefore, these coatings along with their limitations have been discussed precisely. Automotive paintshops apply huge quantities of paint, and hence they have a greater environmental impact. Assessment of the harmful effects of paintshop operations and the ways to overcome these effects has also been discussed specifically in this article.
