Pollution Résumé : Materials are deeply connected with the environment, because they stem from raw materials extracted from the geosphere, rely on large amounts of energy and of water in their production stage, project emissions to air, water and soil when their ores (or minerals) are mined, when they are made in steel mills or cement kilns, including very significant amounts of greenhouse gases. They also contribute to emissions and energy consumption of the artifacts of which they are part, either consumption or investment goods. Their connection with the biosphere raises many issues, in terms of toxicology, ecotoxicology or biodiversity or simply of public health or in the working place. Materials, as an essential part of the anthroposphere, interact deeply with the anthroposphere itself but also with the biosphere, the geosphere, the atmosphere and the hydrosphere, thus with nature in a general way through mechanisms which can no longer simply be described at the margin, as resource depletion or as pollution. This raises issues related to the sustainability of materials in human activities, in which they are deeply immersed and entangled. The standard way of dealing with these environmental issues is to invoke sustainability and to explain that all actors are engaged in sustainable development, a morals or an ethics that points in which direction to go: all players in the materials field, industry, institutions and research, claim allegiance to sustainable development. At a more technical level, specific tools like Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) are used extensively to measure the interaction of materials with the environment. This, however, is not enough to deal properly with the environmental issues of materials, because these issues are not marginal any longer: the anthroposphere has become so large with respect to the biosphere, the geosphere and the planet in general that environmental risk is now part of modern life, especially in connection with climate change and the loss of biodiversity. To go deeper in analyzing the connection of human activities with nature, it is therefore necessary to reach out to SSH (Social Science and Humanities) disciplines and particularly to environmental ethics. This is a prerequisite for materials scientists (and others) to act decisively in the future in the face of the danger that lies ahead of us. The present paper reviews the advances of environmental ethics, a fairly young discipline born in the 1970s, in as far as it can help all actors on the world anthropospheric theater choose their lines for the future in a more conscious and sophisticated way than simply claiming obedience to sustainability. We will review briefly intellectual forerunners of the discipline like Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Henri David Thoreau, Rachel Carson or Paul Ehrlich. This will help flesh out well-known concepts like the precautionary principle or the “polluter-pays” principle, which are invoked in creating new materials or new processes to keep pollution and health issues under control, as part of the constraints of professional ethics but also of environmental law. It will be necessary to question to whom or to what the key concept of intrinsic value is attached : people, all living organisms or ecosystems, i.e. the environment in general, and thus to define anthropocentrism, biocentrism and ecocentrism. Environmental law and the ethics of sustainable development are still mainly anthropocentric while scientific ecology is more clearly ecocentric. To tackle the challenges of environmental issues as they are posed today and to avoid catastrophes, it might be necessary in the future for all social players and for people of the world of materials to follow the steps of environmental ethics and to move up from anthropocentrism to the broader vision of ecocentrism.

Note de contenu : - EXEMPLES DE DÉFIS AVEC L'ENERGIE ELECTRIQUE EN LCA : Les énergies renouvelables et les mélanges d'électricité régionalisés - Net bâtiments à énergie zéro - Entrepôt réfrigéré (gestion de la charge) - Autres domaines d'application

Pollution Résumé : Growing environmental awareness in society increasingly influences individual everyday decisions, such as which product to buy or how to sustainably use it. Yet, available information to support these decisions is often limited, or difficult to understand particularly regarding sustainability. Effective ways of communicating environmental impacts of individual decisions are required to close this gap. While Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is an established tool to evaluate environmental impacts of products and services and support environmental decision-making, the results are typically standardized and based on statistical or averaged data. However, for individuals, this information might be irrelevant, as it neglects personal situation, behavior, information need, or individual level of expertise. In tackling those central issues of personalization in LCA, this article focuses on two main questions: How can individual aspects be addressed in LCA and at which stages of the methodology can LCA be personalized? For this purpose, the ISO 14040/44 standards are analyzed regarding individuality, and current approaches in literature are presented. In an explorative approach, this research identifies two general approaches of personalizing LCA. A personalized Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) enables evaluating the environmental impacts of personal(ized) products and conditions. A broader personalization approach based on the flexibility of the methodological framework of LCA aims at providing understandable and relevant results for individual stakeholders. This article provides an overview, outlines key aspects of this vision, and points out further research needs to bring the concept into application. Indeed life cycle processes, and therefore also elementary flows, are most likely to be geographically scattered due to global supply chains. The environmental impacts related to an elementary flow can be different across the globe depending on the spatial variability of ecosystem sensitivity. Integrating spatial dimension seems to be a promising way to increase LCA results’ reliability by reducing spatial uncertainties. LCA regionalisation refers to the integration of the spatial variability that really exists to improve result representativeness and reduce spatial uncertainties. As regionalisation requires additional effort for LCA practitioners, it is necessary to ensure the interest of such an effort and to prioritise it. This work proposes two methodologies to prioritise the regionalisation effort in LCA depending on the decision context and the type of study. They allow the selection of impacts, processes and regionalisation aspects that LCA practitioners need to focus on. The first one is a ready-to-use methodology and the second one involves more advanced tools based on spatial uncertainty analysis. The proposed methodologies are stepwise. The ready-to-use methodology involves tools that are already used by LCA practitioners and is based on impact contribution analysis. Regarding the advanced methodology, most relevant impact categories and processes to be further investigated for regionalisation are selected according to their impact contribution and their uncertainty level by using Monte Carlo simulation and regression analysis. The regionalisation effort is estimated depending on the confidence level required for the case study. The relevance and limits of each methodologies are investigated. Results underline the importance to take into account both impact and uncertainty contributions to select processes that need to be regionalised. The proposed methodologies highlight the need to focus on the goal and scope at the early stages of a study in order to clearly identify the intended audience and its requirements regarding study quality. A dialogue with the decision maker during the study would be beneficial. Those approaches can be relevant for other types of uncertainty but should be adapted.
