Several studies on curing of the coatings by IR spectroscopy have been reported in the literature. However, the optimization of curing composition by IR spectroscopy for achieving desired coating performance is not discussed in detail. In the present paper, the optimization of curing composition of bisphenol-A liquid epoxy and an amine adduct by IR spectroscopy is reported along with the coating performance. PALS data were obtained before and after specimen water equilibration. Specimens were bisphenol A epoxide (B) and/or glycol epoxide (G) cured with a polyamide. Free volume sites increased linearly and cavity sizes decreased linearly with epoxide B:G ratio. Glass transition temperature (Tg) increased with epoxide B:G ratio. Water molecules in wet epoxy B filled approximately six percent of the cavities. Epoxy G cavity size increased 11.4% after water equilibrium and was ascribed to cavity expansion. PALS results differed for commercial corrosion inhibitors in wet and dry mixtures of these epoxides. Note de contenu : - INTRODUCTION : PALS background - Polymer/water interactions
- EXPERIMENTAL : Specimen preparation - PALS

Thereafter water soluble epoxy polymers were synthesised from phthalic anhydride alone, phthalic anhydride and trimellitic anhydride, phthalic anhydride and maleopimaric acid and maleopimaric acid alone. The methylated melamine formaldehyde polymer was synthesised and was used as curing agent. The film properties of the pigmented coating compositions were studied in detail.
