The appearance of hair fibers changed dramatically due to thinning and fusion of scales as well as fusion of individual hair fibers with each other (inter-fiber fusion) to form rod-like structures stuck together by solubilized, oozed out, gelled and finally hardened proteins. The hair became extremely rigid and brittle with radial cracks forming mostly smooth radial fractures and occasionally step fractures. There was also internal fusion of the cellular structure of the fiber. Hair fibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV-visible microspectrophotometry. UV-visible spectra showed that natural hair color (melanin) plays an important role in protecting hair proteins, mostly by a sacrificial mechanism. Indian and Chinese black hair, which are rich in melanin, resist photochemical degradation much better than hair of European origin with moderate, low or no melanin content. The particles were obtained using modified deposition-precipitation with Urea (DP Urea). The Taguchi method was implemented successfully to optimize the photoactivity for Au/TiO2photocatalyst. The optimized catalyst was characterized by XRD, BET, TEM, XPS and UV-visible absorption spectra techniques. It was found that Au3+/Ti4+molar ratio was the main parameter having significant effect on photocatalytic activity. Under optimal conditions, the observed Au nano-particle size and distributions indicate, that smaller gold nanoparticles (*1.8 nm diameter) were obtained, and the existing of Au particles promote the photoadsorption of oxygen on the surface of photocatalysts. Both are responsible for the significantly enhanced catalytic activity of commercial TiO2(pure P-25) toward the photodegradation of NPE-10-probably by increasing the rate of production of separated electrons and holes. The growth of plastics in automotive applications Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Rose Ann Ryntz, Auteur Année de publication : 2006 Article en page(s) : p. 3-14 Note générale : Bibliogr. Plastics continue to improve, to afford flexibility, high-impact, and strength. In automotive applications, plastics have increased in utilization to comprise approximately 10% of the total vehicle weight. They offer increased ductility, freedom from corrosion, and increased styling capability. Although plastics have had a remarkable impact on our culture, it is obvious that there is a price to be paid for their use. Plastics are almost too good, as they are durable when processed correctly, but easily damaged when utilized in the incorrect application. Plastics also degrade very slowly, making recycling mandatory. And finally, while plastics consume only 4% of the world's oil production (petroleum is the raw material that is chemically altered to form commercial plastics), their cost hinges on the cost of petroleum. As petroleum prices increase, so too will the cost of plastic. In 2004, the higher price of plastic forced many plastic manufacturers out of business, and forced many automotive suppliers to look into alternative replacements. With publications such as USA Today reporting that current oil reserves will only last 40 years, scientists continue to seek cheaper alternatives to plastic. This article summarizes the history of commercial plastic development, with a focus on utilization of the materials in automotive applications. Damage criteria of plastic components, namely scratch, oxidative degradation, and impact, are discussed in relation to coatings and processing robustness. Environmental regulations, particularly in relation to recycling mandates, are explained. And finally, trends in alternative material development, including bioplastics, films, ceramic coatings, and nano-composites, are formulated.
