Tannage au chromeIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Green solvents, such as propylene carbonate (PC), can be used in leather processing to improve the efficiency of chrome tanning and reduce wastewater. Here we report a combined small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) study on PC and its efficacy as a carrier medium during chrome tanning. SAXS analysis on the collagen structure of chrome tanned leather using PC, compared to conventionally tanned leather using water, showed an increase in Cr uptake in addition to the more uniform penetration of Cr through the leather cross-section. The increased binding of Cr to the collagen matrix drives the decreased hydration environment of the collagen triple helix. Furthermore, DSC studies show a uniform hydrothermal stability for the PC samples due to the more even distribution of Cr through the collagen matrix. Understanding the mechanisms by which chrome tanning occurs in non-aqueous solvents can guide us towards a more sustainable future for the leather industry. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Thermal analysis of chrome bovine leather was performed by means of thermogravimetry (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The glass-transition, the crystallisation and the denaturation temperatures of the collagen molecule within the leather matrix were measured. At low moisture content one single endothermic peak which corresponds to the denaturation process of leather and the evaporation of water was detected. At higher moisture contents two endothermic peaks were detected, the first one corresponding to denaturation and the second one to evaporation of water. The temperature of the low-temperature peak decreased as the water content increased. At much higher moisture content the low temperature peak maintained its temperature being equal to the shrinkage temperature of leather determined by the IUP-16 standard method. The glass transition of room-conditioned leather determined by DSC in sealed pans was approx. 45ºC. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The industry is aware that a hide yields more byproducts than finished leather. Collagen is the source of both the leather and the byproducts. Faced with environmental regulations and a grim economic picture, the innovative tanner, if he is to secure a position for himself in the marketplace, must do more with these byproducts to enhance his financial return from them and to ease waste generation.
A review of limed collagen generators, nonleather uses of collagen, and the available potential growth of these uses will indicate where development efforts should be placed.Note de contenu : - THE SOURCE AND AVAILABILITY OF LIMED CATTLEHIDE COLLAGEN

MétalloprotéinasesIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Hide and skin are complex tissue where the most abundant component is collagen. Matrix metalloproteinases and bacterial collagenases are two kinds of collagenases that can cleave the triple-helical domain of native fibrillar collagens. In this paper, the family members and domain composition of matrix metalloproteinases and bacterial collagenases are summarized. The catalytic mechanism of collagen hydrolysis by collagenases is described, and the methods adopted to date for investigating and regulating collagenases and their inhibitors are reviewed. Furthermore, the applications of collagenases and their inhibitors in biomedicine, food processing and the enzymatic unhairing process in the leather-making industry are presented.
