Coal-derived, solid resins as economic raw materials for coatings / Stefan Holberg in JOURNAL OF COATINGS TECHNOLOGY AND RESEARCH, Vol. 18, N° 3 (05/2021)
[article]

Test d'immersionIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Solvent extraction of subbituminous coal at mild conditions (360°C) provides solid extracts that consist of numerous organic molecules that can be utilized in the synthesis of polymeric coatings. We describe the extraction process as well as the application of the resultant materials, which bear phenolic groups as the main reactive functionality, for the synthesis of polyurethane and epoxy coatings. The respective reactions of coal extract with isocyanates or epoxides were validated by 13C-NMR. By combining 50–67% coal extract with suitable, flexible co-reactants and co-resins, we formulated coatings with excellent wet adhesion to aluminum, flexibility, and corrosion protection with the same quality as reference coatings. The work is an advancement toward the goal of developing economic and resource-efficient routes from coal to polymers with attractive properties, where coal extracts can compete with petrochemically derived raw materials. ThermodynamiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A paint is a complex liquid coating material composed of pigments, fillers, polymeric binders, and other additives dispersed and/or dissolved in a liquid. When applied to a surface, the liquid is changed by a film forming process to a solid, adherent composite film. The formation of a paint film is so spontaneous and familiar that most give little thought to the mechanism and dynamics of the process. Yet it is the dynamics of film formation thot can provide perspective to the design and application of polymeric latexes. Previously, a number of workers have studied the mechanism by which the latex particles coalesce with each other. Their attention has been focused on the details of how particle-particle contacts and interactions take place. It is the author's intent to emphasize the thermodynamics of the filming process. A general theory of film formation from a paint is derived from thermodynamic considerations. Model calculations are made and the results are encouraging. They are able to predict the effect of pigmentation and identify new areas for polymer and formulation research. The theory is capable of being specialized for either solvent or latex systems. Architectural coatings make up approximately 50% of a 23 billion-litre global paint market. In Europe, the end-users of architectural coatings are split evenly between professional painters and do-it-yourself (DIY) clientele with applications focused primarily on interior walls and ceilings, and exterior façades. Various European market drivers, such as environmentalism, regulatory limits and globalisation have accelerated a move in architectural coatings from solvent-based systems to water-based systems :
- Environmentalism : an environmentally friendly push to lower VOC levels in architectural coatings, reflected by consumer preference for 'greener' architectural coatings. In most instances water-based coatings have lower VOC levels than those that are solvent-based.
- Regulatory limits : European Union Directive 2004/42/EC for Decorative and Vehicle Refinishing Paints calls for a reduction in VOC levels in both solvent-based and water-based systems by 2007.
The same regulatory calls for a more drastic reduction in VOC levels by 2010, making water-based systems the intuitive choice for architectural coatings.
- Globalisation : various coatings manufacturers and even retail chains now institute global environmental policies, which have led to a rationalisation of product lines, the introduction of consumer labeling schemes, a move toward water-based systems, and an overall reduction in the VOC levels of these water-based paints.Note de contenu : - Water-based coatings systems
