Sol-gel, ProcédéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In the present work, sodium phosphomolybdate, an environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitor with good anticorrosive behavior when applied on steel substrates, has been loaded and encapsulated in mesoporous silica nanoparticles without and with a hollow core in order to produce different smart nanocontainers. These nanocontainers have been designed to allow controlled release of the inhibitor in response to an external stimulus, thereby achieving more efficient and more economical use of the active substance. Corrosion activity leads to local changes in pH, and this work considers such changes as a signal of great interest. The nanocontainers respond to a pH of 10 or higher by increasing the release rate of the encapsulated active material. The smart nanocontainers have been incorporated into hybrid organic–inorganic sol–gel coatings and applied on carbon steel substrates. Mechanical defects have been made in the organic coating, reaching through to the metallic substrate, in order to study anticorrosive behavior in the affected area. A characterization study has been carried out at the defects and in their surroundings by means of two different localized electrochemical techniques: Scanning Kelvin Probe and Localized Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy. The results have shown significant improvement in the anticorrosive behavior of sol–gel coatings when formulated with smart nanocontainers loaded with sodium phosphomolybdate compared to a reference sol–gel coating. Revêtements:PeintureIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Metals, in particular steel and aluminium, are among the most important construction materials to be met in everyday life. However, these versatile materials are prone to corrosion, resulting in safety impairments, aesthetic failures, and, on the bottom line, economic damage. A major part of surface engineering of metals therefore is focused on corrosion protection.
Organic coatings have been used on any substrate for design purposes as well as to preserve the outward appearance. When applied to metals, corrosion protection becomes their most important technical feature. Though, in this respect, the primary effect of a coating is to for a physical barrier, there is no simple rule of "the thicker, the better". Effective corrosion protection provided by an organic coating requires proper preparation of the substrate surface, expert formulation of treatment and coating chemicals and appropriate application processes, as well as adaptation to different uses and service environments.
A lot of literature has been published on single aspect of corrosion protective coatings. However, corrosion protection by organic coatings is a truly cross-functional issue. Whereas, to the lead author's opinion, a unified approach to this taks is lacking that highlights the role of all disciplines involved in the creation and use of corrosion protection coatings for metals.
The intention of this book is to provide this missing synopsis. It features an up-to-date picture of the quality and chemistry of a substrate surface, its proper preparation by conversion treatment, the function of resins and anticorrosive pigments in paints, and novel concepts for corrosion protection. It is addressed to all parties involved in metal surface and coatings engineering, both the supplier and the user, both the experts as well as the student in any of the single disciplines. It is intended to contribute to a better understanding of the mutual roles and responsibilities in corrosion protective organic coatings, and pave the way to a more durable and sustainable preservation of our valuables and resources.Note de contenu : - Surface preparation

PigmentsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The main objective of this review is to describe some of the important topics related to the use of marine and protective coatings for anticorrosive purposes. In this context, "protective" refers to coatings for containers, offshore constructions, wind turbines, storage tanks, bridges, rail cars, and petrochemical plants while "marine" refers to coatings for ballast tanks, cargo holds and cargo tanks, decks, and engine rooms on ships. The review aims at providing a thorough picture of state-of-the-art in anticorrosive coatings systems. International and national legislation aiming at reducing the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have caused significant changes in the anticorrosive coating industry. The requirement for new VOC-compliant coating technologies means that coating manufacturers can no longer rely on the extensive track record of their time-served products to convince consumers of their suitability for use. An important aspect in the development of new VOC-compliant, high-performance anticorrosive coating systems is a thorough knowledge of the components in anticorrosive coatings, their interactions, their advantages and limitations, as well as a detailed knowledge on the failure modes of anticorrosive coatings. This review, which mainly deals with European experience and practice, includes a description of the different environments an anticorrosive coating system may encounter during service. In addition, examples of test methods and standards for determination of the performance and durability of anticorrosive coatings have been included. The different types of anticorrosive coatings are presented, and the most widely applied generic types of binders and pigments in anticorrosive coatings are listed and described. Furthermore, the protective mechanisms of barrier, sacrificial, and inhibitive coatings are outlined. In the past decades, several alternatives to organic solvent-borne coatings have reached the commercial market. This review also presents some of these technologies and discusses some of their advantages and limitations. Finally, some of the mechanisms leading to degradation and failure of organic coating systems are described, and the reported types of adhesion loss are discussed.
