A series of high solid alkyd polymers from soya and dehydrated castor oil fatty acid (SOFA and DCOFA respectively) combination with varying percentage of Dipentaerythritol (DPE ; a hexa-functional polyol), have been synthesized and characterized for their physico chemical, optical, thermal and mechanical properties. For the study purpose the polymers were prepared at 80 % solids keeping the oil length constant. The curing behaviour of the alkyds was studied using FT-IR and DSC. Increasing DPE content in resin backbone was found to increase gloss and hardness. The gloss improvement was also supported well by AFM pictures. Results of 500 hours of QUV exposure revealed higher gloss retention for DP based systems. When compared for the anticorrosive properties, the EIS spectrum reveals that alkyd film containing 100 % DPE has the higher value of impedance. The overall performance of the DPE based system reveals the excellent combination of green aspects with improved coatings which is the need of the day. The reduction in molecular weight helps to achieve application viscosity by an increase in free volume. Various polyurethane polyols have been synthesised by reacting the diols with polyisocyanates. The molecular weight and polydispersity indexes of these polyols have been determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The viscosity of 50%. polyol solutions in various solvents has been determined at different temperatures. The temperature dependence on viscosity of solution of these polyols has been determined by the Williams, Landel and Ferry (WLF) equation. The non-linear regression analysis has been solved by using Levenberg Marquardt's algorithm. It is found that non-linear regression analysis gives high correlation coefficients and very low overall residual errors. The variation in the values of constants A and B for each WLF equation in the polyol solution indicates that these constants are system dependent. The values of constants A and B obtained for polyurethane polyols in a particular solvent have been used to calculate the values of glass transition temperature of the oligomer solution (Tg,) at different concentrations. The values of Tg, are found to vary with concentration. As the concentration of polymer increases there is an increase in the Tg, value. The tensile properties and resistance to scratch of resins prepared using these polyols and butylated melamine formaldehyde are better than those of conventional resins. The VOC content of these coating formulations is lower than the value prescribed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

RevêtementsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Oligourethane diols were crosslinked with melamine formaldehyde, and their crosslink density was determined by using an equilibrium swelling method. In formulations containing primary or secondary hydroxylated diol the major part of the crosslinker is consumed by trans-etherification reactions and self-condensation. The aromatic nature of TDI imparts rigidity while the aliphatic IPDI results in flexibility of the backbone chain of oligomer. The profile of cure schedules has been determined in the form of a cure window which measures the extent of reaction in terms of crosslink density as a function of bake temperature. The experimentally determined properties like tensile strength and MEK rub-resistance have been taken into consideration for fixing the lower and upper limits of XLD in designing the cure windows of individual coating formulations. The baking schedules of coatings have also been expressed in the form of nominal and true cure windows. The increasing social, environmental pollution and political awareness over the years led to a creation of regulatory bodies. The information about the enactment of Rule 66, Safety Health and Environment, Environmental Protection Agency, OSHA and United Nations Volatile Organic Component-Protocol as well as several other aspects has been reviewed. The problems associated with volatile organic components, the various options to control them, the strategy and the response of the paint industry, the possibilities in eco-friendly coating formulations, their advantages and limitations are described.
