Regular inspections of coatings are required to ensure their integrity and, therefore, to verify their stated performance. However, for metallic structures located in harsh places, coating inspection can pose significant safety and logistical challenges. Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is a rapid, nondestructive and relatively inexpensive analytical technique. It is currently employed to analyze different chemicals in fields like agriculture, food, and pharmaceuticals. Similarly, hyperspectral imaging (HSI) creates a spatial map of spectral information by measuring light reflected from a material. In this work, hyperspectral imaging in the NIR portion of the electromagnetic spectrum (NIR-HSI) is used to accurately distinguish between the chemically different binders employed in commercial organic coatings. In addition, k-means clustering is explored as a tool to provide diagnostic information about the spatial inhomogeneities in the chemical structure of an applied coating, which, if undetected, can lead to coating defects during service life. The results of this work suggest that the NIR-HSI could be used for remote inspections of organic coatings. Titre : Determination of changes in mass and volume of linseed oil during drying Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Peter Svane, Auteur Année de publication : 2006 Article en page(s) : p. 327-331 Note générale : Bibliogr.

The plates were weighed in air and in water, and the volumes determined by applying Archimedes' principle. All of the oils gained considerably in mass, with a maximum of 12% within seven days. The volume, however, decreased with large individual differences from one oil to another. A cold-pressed raw linseed oil decreased in volume by almost 15% whereas the volume of an alkali-refined linseed oil only decreased by a few percent. It is well known that linseed oil-based coatings are prone to crocodiling (surface crack formation); it is suggested that the severity of this phenomenon may be related to the volumetric reduction of the binder during curing. The described method is suggested as a simple means of screening linseed oil binders for formulation and development purposes. Note de contenu : - Experimental : Principle - Materials - Performance

Transition vitreuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Dirt pick-up is a long-standing issue for exterior architectural coatings. Dirt pick-up resistance (DPR) is highly sought by end users, and significant resources have been committed by paint manufacturers to improve it. The task is complicated by the multitude of regional and local factors such as seasonal weather, intensity of economic activity, or atmospheric particle burden. Typically, paint manufacturers try to control DPR via careful selection of additives and formula optimization. Testing the new formulas in real time is long and, therefore, there is a clear need for a faster and more reliable test that takes into account the key elements of the dirt pick-up mechanism: particle transport, adhesion, and release to/from the surface. Our team has developed an accelerated test that focuses on thermally driven adhesion and takes a fraction of the time necessary for outdoor exposure testing. The test correlates well with early outdoor exposure results when formulation parameters are controlled and when there are moderate-to-large performance differences among paint formulas. The test was used to improve the accelerated DPR of a paint formula, which subsequently was verified against real-time outdoor exposure in three geographic regions with different climates and airborne particulate pollution levels.

ThermogravimétrieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Three two-layer heat-resistant and anticorrosion paints have been formulated from urethane siloxane binder and traditional anticorrosion pigments such as micaceous iron oxide (MIO), zinc phosphate (ZP), and aluminum oxide. These pigments were used as the dominant components of different undercoats or topcoats. Heat-resistant pigments such as silicon nitride and glass-spheres were used in the composition of the topcoats. Thermogravimetric analysis of paints shows that the paint with ZP as dominant component of the undercoat have the highest heat-resistance and stability in inert gas and oxygen. The paint with a combination of MIO and ZP has the best hardness as well as the best protective and anticorrosion properties based on the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. A maximum synergic effect of the properties of pigments seems to appear in this paint. Surface morphology of paints was studied by means of scanning electron microscopy. Heated at different temperatures and for several hours, paint containing MIO as the dominant component in the undercoat exhibits the best mechanical and adhesion properties.
