Surfaces -- AnalyseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The so-called fouling release coatings typically rely on a dual non-toxic mode of action "non-stick" properties, traditionally achieved through surface smoothness and a low surface tension (hydrophobicity), and a "fouling release" behaviour related to a low modulus of elasticity (Young's modulus). While the "fouling release" properties associated with the polydimethylsiloxane matrice have remained basically unchanged over the past years, a significant amount release coatings is a unique blend of silicone polymers that maintains a more hydrophilic surface, clearly delaying diatomic slime settlement and, hence, subsequent fouling. This translates into a lower hull skin friction over longer periods of time which contributes to significantly lower fuel consumption, and, directly related, lower emissions of green house gases, combustion particles (PM) and other harmful gases such as Sox and NOx. The water contact angles (WCAs) on the composite coatings were measured via contact angle measuring device. The antiwear performance was characterized via ball-on-disk sliding tribo-tests. Experimental results show that the addition of ceria with a content of 5 wt% is the most effective to enhance hydrophobicity of the coatings, resulting from the coating surface structure, roughness, and intrinsic hydrophobicity of ceria. Moreover, the addition of ceria is helpful to the improvement of antiwear performances of PTFE composite coatings, when the content of ceria is 1-7 wt%. Ceria/PTFE composite coatings with a ceria content of 5 wt% show a wear rate of 0.388 x 9 10-4 mm3/Nm, which is 80.6% lower than that of PTFE coating without ceria (2.000 x 10-4/Nm) Note de contenu : - Contact angle and coating surface topography

Surfaces -- AnalyseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A miniature impedance sensor used for field diagnosis of the early failure of coatings has been developed based on microelectronics and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The aging process of polyurethane-based coatings in salt spray test chamber was studied using the impedance sensor. Several critical indexes related to EIS such as phase angle (θ10Hz, θ15kHz), breakpoint frequency (fb), specific capacitance (C10Hz, C15kHz), and impedance modulus (Z0.1Hz) were proposed to evaluate the severity of coating degradation. The results indicated that the impedance sensor could accurately monitor the degradation process of coatings, and once Z0.1Hz < 106 Ω cm2, fb > 100 Hz, or θ10Hz < 20°, the coating may be regarded as completely degraded and fails to protect the metal substrate.
Surfaces -- AnalyseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The scratch behavior and resistance of acrylic-based polyurethane coatings were studied. The effects of fumed silica and polyethylene wax were investigated using an area-contact scratch tip, which can apply a constant load to the coating surfaces at a relatively low stress level. Measurements of the normalized changes in gloss (%Gn) and luminance (%Ln) could be provided as reliable and meaningful methodologies for estimating the scratch resistance and subtle damage to polymeric coating surfaces. A higher gloss-valued coating surface has better scratch resistance. The addition of nano-silica particles provides the increases in hardness, transparency, and resistance to scratch damage for the acrylic-based polyurethane surface, whereas the polyethylene wax contributes to the increases in gloss and smoothness for the coating surface. The surface characteristics observed are responsible for the improved scratch performance of the acrylic-based polyurethane coating surface.
