Natural dyeing uses metallic mordants for improving the dye's fastness properties. However, metallic mordants are also toxic. Herein, both the dyes and mordants were extracted from plant waste using water as a green solvent. The extracted dyes were then applied to the cotton fabric using a natural mordant. The dyed fabric samples were characterised for colour yield, fastness properties, ultraviolet protection and antibacterial activity. For the intended purpose, the wastes of sugarcane bagasse, wheat bran and rice husk were used for dye and mordant extraction. It was found that by increasing the extraction temperature from 30 to 60°C, the dye yield increased. From the K/S values, it was observed that premordanting gave better colour strength than post-mordanting or meta-mordanting. The overall ratings for washing and crocking were 3-4 and 4-5, respectively. No significant antibacterial activity was observed in the dyed samples. However, excellent ultraviolet protection was observed. Wet-blue (tannage)Peau tannée au chrome (le chrome donne une couleur bleue)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The development of commercially successful salt-free chrome tanning technology is the need of global leather sector to reduce the total dissolved solids in wastewater. Though some attempts have been made to develop salt-free chrome tanning technology, drawbacks such as slow diffusion of chromium, unevenness in softness and other organoleptic properties are the major concern. The generation of localized acid swelling might be a reason for the above drawbacks and no scientific literature available for the same. Hence, it is important to analyze the effect of acid swelling and its impact on the diffusion of chromium, ageing characteristics of wet-blue leather and physical properties of crust leather. The results show that the acid swelling delays the diffusion of chromium in tanning process and also enhances the growth marks on wet-blue leather. The ageing study reveals that the wet-blue obtained from acid swollen system dehydrates faster than the conventional salt based chromium tanning system. In addition, the wet-blue leather from acid swollen system is prone to fungal attack. The industrial glove leather obtained from acid swollen system has reduced strength characteristics viz., 15% reduction in tensile strength, 17% reduction in tear strength and 20% reduction in grain crack/bursting strength. Further, the degree of heterogeneity in softness is high for crust leather obtained from acid swollen system and also more looseness with internal emptiness. Color value measurements reveal that the crust leather obtained from the conventional tanning system is lighter in shade than the acid-swollen system. The results will be useful to design commercially viable salt-free or low-salt tanning systems as well as to tackle the inadvertent industrial scenario where the tanners are looking for solutions for accidental acid swelling and subsequent salvage of the leathers for possible recovery and applications. Index. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : The aim of this study was to evaluate the coloration of zirconia ceramic by adding three kinds of metal oxide. This was done with different concentrations of Fe2O3, CeO2, and Bi2O3 in tetragonal zirconia polycrystals stabilised with 3Y-TZP powder compacted at 200 MPa using cold isostatic pressure and full sintering. X-ray diffraction analysis was used to examine the structure of the shaded 3Y-TZP. The chromaticity of sintered bodies was measured on a spectrophotometer. The coloration of zirconia by the three kinds of metal oxide was determined. With the addition of CeO2, the lightness of the zirconia was about 84–87, a* decreased slightly, and the colour shifted to a more yellow-green hue. With an increasing content of Fe2O3, the chroma of the ceramic became more intense, the lightness decreased, and the colour changed to a red-yellow hue. With an increasing concentration of Bi2O3, the colour of the materials shifted to a light saffron yellow. X-ray diffraction spectra revealed only tetragonal phase. Results show that zirconia ceramic can be colourised using Fe2O3, CeO2, and Bi2O3.

It is found that the addition of Fe2O3 and CeO2 not only changes the colour of Y-TZP, but also reduces the light transmittance. Meanwhile, the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterisation and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis show that the combination of Y-TZP and the colourant is stable and the structure is uniform. Our findings can improve the understanding of coloration of Y-TZP by metal oxides, and support a quantitative assessment approach for aesthetic performance of dental restoration material.

Traîtements de surfaceIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : Ink dot distribution on cotton fabrics determines the colour performance of reactive dye inkjet printing, and ink drop spreading is one of the important factors influencing the ink dot distribution. In order to reveal the relationship between fabric pretreatment and ink drop spreading, two pieces of cotton fabric were pretreated respectively with sodium alginate and sodium alginate plus high fatty acid derivative solutions. Results indicate that the surface energy of the cotton fabrics was reduced from 73.79 to 69.45 and 58.49 mJ m?2 after the pretreatment with sodium alginate and sodium alginate plus high fatty acid derivative respectively. Correspondingly, the spreading area of cyan ink drops on these fabrics was reduced from 104.9 to 92.5 and 72.3 mm2. Furthermore, on the fabric treated with sodium alginate plus high fatty acid derivative, the strip-like ink dots were narrow and short, which means the dye was concentrated in an area on the fabric surface. Colorimetric values of the inkjet-printed fabrics demonstrated that the high fatty acid derivative would enhance the ability of sodium alginate to control ink droplet spreading, thereby improving the colour performance.
