In this study, high-density polyethylene-based flat-pressed WPCs are reinforced with carbon and glass fibre-woven fabrics for uses where high mechanical properties are needed in outdoor conditions. For this purpose, WPCs are exposed to accelerated weathering conditions to determine the effect of weathering with and without reinforcement. The results show that, after weathering, colour changes are inevitable for WPCs. Attenuated total reflection–Fourier transform-infrared analysis reveals the changes in the matrix's chemical structure, illustrating the alterations in WPC surface characteristics. The mechanical properties of WPCs decrease as a result of photodegradation. However, the reinforced WPCs have higher mechanical properties than the control samples, despite extensive degradation. Carbon fibre (200 g/m2) achieved the greatest flexural strength and modulus of elasticity, 150% and 122% higher, respectively, than unreinforced WPCs. Scanning electron microscopy analysis shows that, despite the intensive photodegradation on the surface, the integration of the matrix and woven fabrics was still strong. The surface erosion was observed with light microscopy. The visual appearance also exhibited some changes that occurred on the surface of WPCs.

Traîtements de surfaceIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The epoxy resin coating has been widely used; however, its anticorrosion performance still needs to be improved. Basalt materials have been used as fillers in the field of anticorrosive coatings due to their good corrosion resistance and acid and alkali resistance. In this paper, 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS) was used as a coupling agent to modify the surface of basalt powder. The modified basalt powder (MBP) was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared-attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR). The MBP was added to epoxy resin in different proportions as fillers, and the coatings with different MBP contents were prepared by applying the mixture on the metal substrates. The hardness of coatings can be enhanced up to 0.25 GPa with the increase in MBP, and the elastic of coatings increases to the highest of 4.97 GPa for MBP-10/EP. Their water absorption rates after soaking in water for 21 h decreased to 0.75%. Meanwhile, the anticorrosion performance of the coatings on substrates during exposure to 3.5 wt% NaCl solution was investigated by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and the circuit-fitting of EIS tests was also performed. The corrosion resistance of EP coating has been obviously improved by adding MBP, with the low-frequency impedance value (|Z|0.01Hz) of MBP-10/EP up to 2.43 × 108 Ω·cm2 after being immersed in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution for 15 d, which was 7.8 times higher than that of neat epoxy coating (MBP-0/EP).
