Résistance à l'abrasionIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The change in business trends for automotive coatings has started with the strategy of the car makers to concentrate on core competencies, followed by a strategy to outsource nonstrategic activities. Up till now Long term durability in terms of colour and gloss of coating has been mostly achieved nevertheless, a 10 years' warranty remains a target to be worked on by improving resin andadditive performances in optimized basecoat & clear coat formulae.
Maintenance-free coatings have been prevalent in the automotive market for some time. Customers are aware of the scratch problems caused by car wash. Furthermore, scratch-free cars have a higher attraction potential in dealer show rooms. Solutions are difficult to find owing to the fact that a coating has to pass a number of tests and has a broad spectrum of performances. One approach for improvement in this respect without detrimental effects on other properties is the evolution of new ideas based on nanotechnology.

Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This study illustrates the capabilities of a nanoindentation/nanoscratch tester to assess mechanical and tribological properties of coating films. Properties such as hardness, elastic modulus, mar and scratch resistance, and critical force for cracking can be accurately measured. Operation of the Nano-Indenter is described in detail. A scanning probe microscope (SPM) is shown to be a valuable supplement to the Nano-Indenter. Well-characterized thermoset acrylic clearcoats and thermoplastic latex films were studied. For the first time, operating parameters are described for measurement of relatively soft coatings, such as films cast from a latex with a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 8°C. Thus, the method is made available for study of most types of coatings. The method can easily discriminate between coatings with different Tgs and crosslink densities. Once operating parameters are established, it takes about 10 minutes for an indentation test and 10 minutes for a scratch test with the Nano-Indenter, and with further automation this time could be reduced. Each indtntation test accurately measures hardness and elastic modulus as a function of depth within the coating, and each scratch test provides additional insight into the material's behavior. The method is sensitive to small changes in polymer composition and formulation, and results are highly reproducible.
Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : While visual appearance represents one of the most important criteria when buying a car, an item of furniture or other life style object, surface robustness makes all the difference when it cornes to daily use, such as washing your car or polishing your home furniture.
High gloss appearance of automotive coatings, in fact, can be affected by micro-scratches, which are invisible to the naked eye, but result in a substantial loss of gloss because of a change in reflection of light (scattering), particularly visible on dark colours (basecoats) in the sunlight. Such scratches occur for instance because of (automatic) carwashes and are mainly due to dirt particles, not so much to the bristle hairs. The same dirt particles can also scratch the coating when driving and/or during harsh weather conditions, causing even more damage (wet vs. dry, or mar, scratching). Definitely, scratch resistance is a very important paint performance parameter for automotive coatings.
To improve the scratch and mar resistance properties of automotive, refinish and high-end industrial coatings, allnex has developed MODAFLOW® NSR 100, a nanosilica-based anti-scratch additive, compatible with high bake 1K and 2K paints as well as Fast Cure room temperature curing 2K isocyanate paints. MODAFLOW® NSR 100 offers best-in-class scratch and mar resistance at low dosage without affecting appearance, giving fully transparent (no haze) clearcoats, unlike other hard nanoparticle-based additives, which can often negatively affect coating appearance, causing lower gloss, increased haze and reduced levelling. MODAFLOW® NSR 100 is supplied as a 35% solution and has excellent compatibility with a broad range of acrylics and polyesters.Note de contenu : - Working principle

The aim of this study was to investigate and model the properties of a combined pigment dyeing and hand-building finishing system for polyester/cotton blended fabrics. The one-step process was investigated using response surface methodology, taking concentrations of pigment, softener, and hand-building finish as experimental variables. It was found that increase in hand-building finish helps to improve colour fastness at higher pigment concentrations but results in deterioration in fabric tear strength. However, the decrease in tear strength can be minimised by increasing the softener concentration. For a 15 g l?1 pigment concentration, optimum fabric tear strength, crease recovery angle, bending length, and dry and wet rubbing fastness properties were obtained using 60 g l?1 of softener and 65 g l?1 of hand-building finish. The prediction equations developed in this study can be used to determine the required amounts of softener and hand-building finish to achieve commercially acceptable results at different pigment concentrations.
