Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : There is an increased demand for abrasive wear-resistant coatings that add durability to steel hydraulic structures, particularly for those subjected to flowing water with debris and alternate wet/dry cycles. These coating systems provide not only corrosion and chemical resistance, but also good erosion and abrasion resistance to the metallic surfaces, which are constantly exposed to flowing water containing sand particles and debris. Generally, vinyl-based coatings are used on hydraulic steel structures to protect them from corrosion and abrasion. However, due to the existence of high water force and debris, the coating is abraded at a faster rate leading to significant maintenance and repair costs. In this study, abrasive wear resistance of conventional vinyl-based coating systems currently used on lock and dam steel structures by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been compared with polymer matrix composite coatings, fibrous polymer coatings, and ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). Six coating systems were evaluated through two-body abrasion tests using a reciprocating abrader under dry and wet conditions. Furthermore, wettability of the coating systems and its effect on the wear rate under the presence of water was studied. In addition, scanning electron microscopy of the wear tracks on different coatings was conducted to study and identify their failure mechanisms. Based on the results, UHMWPE and polymer–ceramic composite coatings were found to perform significantly better than the conventional vinyl-based coatings. RevêtementsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Although many coatings have additives to increase their resistance to mar and scratch damage, those coatings are designed for other functions (decoration, corrosion protection, etc.) and the damage protection is simply done with a little bit of wax or PTFE emulsion. However, there are products of such critical need for scratch protection that a special class of high performance coatings have been designed to protect these materials. The prime usage is in airplane windows or canopies where survival of high speed travelling in the omnipresent dust of the atmosphere is an absolute necessity so the pilot can see to land the aircraft in day or night. The silica filled silane and polyurethane based materials are reviewed, and test procedures discussed. Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=11386

Surfaces -- AnalyseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Surface properties of a polymeric coating system have a strong influence on its performance and service life. However, the surface of a polymer coating may have different chemical, physical, and mechanical properties from the bulk. In order to monitor the coating property changes with environmental exposures from the early stages of degradation, nondestructive techniques with the ability to characterize surface properties with micro- to nanoscale spatial resolution are required. In this article, atomic force microscopy has been applied to study surface microstructure and morphological changes during degradation in polymer coatings. Additionally, the use of AFM with a controlled tip-sample environment to study nanochemical heterogeneity and the application of nanoindentation to characterize mechanical properties of coatings surfaces are demonstrated. The results obtained from these nanometer characterization techniques will provide a better understanding of the degradation mechanisms and a fundamental basis for predicting the service life of polymer coatings.
les polyoléfines thermoplastiques semi-cristallines : polyéthylène (PE), polypropylène (PP), polyméthylpentène (PMP), polybutène-1 (PB-1) ;

Transition vitreuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Utilizing two layers of FBE provides greater versatility in coatings for use in pipeline protection. The first layer has the properties of a stand-alone FBE coating. The top layer provides mechanical-clamage resistance from impact or gouging during handling and construction. Advances in resin technology drarnatically increases flexibiIity and improves abrasion resistance in the coating without negatively affecting other properties. In this paper, we review the performance characteristics of these next-generation abrasion resistant overcoat (ARO) system that provides higher flexibility and impact resistance while maintaining superior long-term adhesion to steel. It has been found that poly(tetra-fluoroethylene) (PTFE) bimodal dispersions have optimal film-forming and particle-packing behaviour at a size ratio of about 0.15, corresponding with the best fit to the random close-packing model, while no significant improvements are observed when the aforesaid size ratio is 0.3.
