Curing was accomplished through the use of an acid-generating photoinitiator, and a photosensitiser was used to shift the initiating wavelength into the visible region. The release potential, mechanical properties, surface tension, and contact angle of the cross-linked polymer were measured. The contact angle and surface tension of the UV-cured coatings were found to be 103° ± 0.05 and 10.93 ± 0.05mJ/m2, respectively. The contact angle and surface tension of the visible light-cured coatings were 102° and 11.42 ± 0.05mJ/m2, respectively. Pull-off adhesion tests revealed that a consistent 0.2MPa of normal force was required to remove the mould from both the UV- and visible light-cured coatings even after 30 releases. Both methods of cure offered the same release properties, but the visible light sample required a much longer cure time. Tension superficielleIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Wetting agents are added to waterborne coatings in order to increase the wetting of the substrate and to improve the compatibility with pigments and other components. Selection of the suitable wetting agent for desired formulation and application properties is critical. For example, anionic wetting agents can have excellent dynamic surface tension control but can often result in an increase in the foaminess of the grind that may appear as microfoam in the applied coating. Low foaming nonionic wetting agents have found value in industrial coatings, where microfoam cannot be tolerated however, they do not provide adequate surface tension control.
To overcome these limitations, a new low foaming, silicon and APEO free multifunctional wetting agent has been developed (SUPREAD® 2059). It provides antifoaming properties, as well as offering fast dynamic surface tension reduction for improved flow and levelling on difficult to wet surfaces like wood, plastics etc. The newly developed multifunctional wetting agent was tested in various coating formulations. The results of the study reveals its outstanding ability in surface wetting, antifoaming, pore filling on wood, block resistance and has shown no negative impact on gloss or rheology.Note de contenu : - BASICS OF WETTING

The blends were processed through three melt mixing strategies: ( i) direct mixing of all three components, (ii) mixing C30B and PBAT followed by mixing with LDPE, and (iii) mixing C30B and LDPE followed by mixing with PBAT. The rheological properties of each system were determined in small amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) experiments. The migration of C30B nanoparticles from the LDPE minor phase towards the PBAT matrix was then monitored in the blend nanocomposites prepared through strategy (iii) via SAOS time sweep experiments. It was firstly understood that the C30B migration could be detected during time sweep SAOS experiments. The migration time was observed to be frequency dependent due to the smaller length scales probed at larger frequencies. Such migration occurred even faster when the SAOS time sweep experiments were conducted at a higher temperature due to the viscosity reduction.

ThermodynamiqueIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : The interaction of two Indian natural dyes, namely madder (Rubia cordifolia) and mallow (Punica granatum), with cationic surfactant cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide and anionic surfactant sodium lauryl sulphate, has been studied. Spectrophotometric data showed a strong interaction between the natural dyes and the surfactants. The critical micelle concentration of the surfactants, determined by measurement of specific conductance and surface tension, was found to decrease on the addition of natural dyes in an aqueous solution of surfactants. The thermodynamic and surface parameters for the interaction have been evaluated. ViscositéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Pinholes are a problem for formulators developing fast-drying, water-based coatings, especially in coatings cured at high temperature and applied at high wet film thickness. Pinholes are often caused by air or solvent vapor release from the film when the coating is too viscous to flow back and repair the holes. Pinholes also occur in baked coatings, as the trapped vapor regains mobility when the coating softens under heating, before crosslinking hardens the film, preventing flow back into the voids.
Hydrocarbon-based defoamers help eliminate the foam and pinholes in these formulations, but their limited compatibility results in lower gloss, poor leveling and surface appearance. This paper describes a new additive that combines both deaeration of microfoam and modified surface drying for pinhole elimination. This new additive shows comparable pinhole elimination compared with hydrocarbon-based defoamers, but without compromising formulation compatibility or final coating appearance.Note de contenu : - New additive development
