ThermodurcissablesIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : A series of bio-based hybrid thermosets composed of maleinated acrylated epoxidized palm oil (MAEPO) and vinyl ester resin (VE) were produced using free radical-induced crosslinking. The amount of petroleum-based resin which was replaced by bio-resin (MAEPO) was varied from 5 to 20 wt%. The structure of the polymer systems was investigated by scanning electron microscopy and dynamic mechanical analysis. The mechanical properties of the VE/MAEPO resins were studied using tensile, flexural and impact tests. The result obtained from structural analysis revealed that for the polymer hybrids with up to 20 wt% bio-resin content, there is good compatibility between MAEPO and VE as no phase separation was observed for these systems. The prepared eco-friendly bio-based thermosetting resins exhibit remarkable improvement in toughness parameters, such as ductility and impact strength, thereby showing potential for use in composites and nanocomposites applications.

ThermodurcissablesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A series of renewable unsaturated polyesters were synthesized from itaconic acid (IA), succinic acid, and 1,4-butanediol by solvent-free polycondensation. Previous studies utilizing IA to make polyesters for coating applications have shown great potential; however, the curing and material properties have not been investigated in detail. The aim of this study was to investigate how the curing is affected by the amount of unsaturations and how well itaconate-based polyesters crosslink without the addition of any other unsaturated monomers or reactive diluents. The chemical structures of the polyesters were confirmed with FTIR, 1H-NMR, and THF–SEC. The degree of curing was studied with FTIR, and the mechanical properties of the crosslinked polyesters were evaluated with DMA, pendulum hardness, and microindentation. The degree of curing was found to be up to 75%, and furthermore, it was found that the final mechanical properties of the crosslinked coatings could be tuned by modifying the IA content in the monomer composition. The results from DMA showed that there is a clear trend between mechanical properties and crosslinking density.
les polyoléfines thermoplastiques semi-cristallines : polyéthylène (PE), polypropylène (PP), polyméthylpentène (PMP), polybutène-1 (PB-1) ;
The market and technology behind bioplastics is going from strength to strength, enjoying high growth rates and a rapidly widening polymer base. The main driving forces are major plastics users and innovative companies. They are creating new raw materials platforms for established plastics that are now partially or wholly biobased. Whereas compostable plastics are focused on a few segments, “drop in” bioplastics are increasingly going mainstream. The only fly in the ointment is the skeptics – not content with scaremongering about oil and gas recently, they are now casting doubt on renewable resources. Note de contenu : - Key trends

ThermodurcissablesIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Knowledge of the percentage by volume of the natural fibers in correspondingly reinforced parts of thermoset plastics is one of the most important criteria in the quality assurance of fiber-reinforced plastics. An innovative microscopic method now makes the determination of the fibers possible within a very short time and with a relatively low fault rate. ThermodurcissablesIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : A novel thermoplastic skin concept, with co-consolidated stringers, is being brought to technology readiness level (TRL) 6. This implies manufacturing and mechanical testing of full scale demonstrator products. The stringers are T-shaped and made of flat preforms that are butt jointed to each other and to the panel skin. An injection molded filler increases strength. The skin is fiber placed over the stringer preforms and the product is co-consolidated at melt temperature. Because of the butt-joints, manufacturing is relatively simple. The result is a tough thermoplastic product that can compete on weight and cost with state-of-the-art thermoset composite panels. Development and testing of the panel concept is being done in a step-by-step process. Consecutive building blocks are: coupons, three-stringer subcomponent panels and finally full scale skin panels. The main panel represents the mid-section of a business jet horizontal tail. The panel will be assembled into a 12 meter span torsion box and tested in the second half of 2011.
