Traîtements de surfaceIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In this study investigations of the effect of atrnospheric pressure plasma activation and plasma coating on leather surface properties were performed. The plasma treatments of leather samples were carried out with a planar dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) at atmospheric pressure. Different gases (02, N2). were used for activating the leather surface and thin layers were deposited on to the finished leathers with hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) precursors. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) end atomic force microscopy (AFM). were employed to characterize the surface properties of the treated leathers. The chemical composition of the leather surfaces was evaluated by energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The surface state of the leathers was evaluated by contact angle measurements. After plasma treatment, the uneven surface of natural leather tends to become smooth by ionic bombardment of the plasma. Experiments show that plasma treatment with.TEOS and HMDSO improves the waterproof quality of leather while plasma activation with gases increases its hydrophilic property. It was concluded that application of plasma activation in combination with plasma coating can be useful for enhancing the hydrophobic and fastness properties of leathers. Surfaces (technologie)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Cellulosic films are typically sensitive towards moisture which limits their industrial applicability. In this study the films made from cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) were surface silylated with hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) by roll-to-roll plasma deposition. The effects on surface hydrophobicity were clear and indisputable. Water contact angles of non-modified and plasma-deposited CNF films were 23° and 103°, respectively. As a result of surface silylation the relative polarity decreased from 46.8% to 0.6%. Surface hydrophobicity correlated well with the plasma deposition line speeds (0.5, 5, and 10 m/min) and the water vapor barrier properties. Silylation also decreased the oxygen transmission rates both at 50% and 80% relative humidity as compared to non-modified CNF films. All films were completely impermeable to olive oil and intact in contact with castor oil, toluene, and n-heptane or mixtures of them. The developed surface hydrophobization method can be exploited in strengthening the position of cellulosic films in high performance film applications.

SynergieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : High-performance epoxy coatings were prepared by crosslinking commercial diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A with silicon–sulfur containing di- and tetra-functional carboxyl curing agents based on cardanol. The curing agents were synthesized and products were analyzed by chemical, spectroscopic, and chromatographic techniques. In the next part, coatings were formulated by varying the ratio of epoxy resin to curing agents on equivalent basis, such as 1:0.6, 1:0.8, and 1:1. The coatings were applied on mild steel panels and cured at 150°C for 30 min. The resultant coatings were evaluated for performance properties including mechanical, chemical, optical, thermal anticorrosive, and flame retardant properties. It was observed that with an increase in concentration of silicon–sulfur containing curing agents, water contact angles of the coatings substantially increased. Moreover, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, Tafel analysis, and salt spray studies revealed that anticorrosive properties of the coatings improved with an increase in concentration of silicon and sulfur. In spite of synergistic effect of silicon–sulfur, only marginal improvement in flame retardant properties was observed.
