Greenhouse gas emissions can only be limited if energy is used more efficiently than it has been to date. Home heating, air conditioning and hot water accoung for the lion's share of private energy consumption. This is unlikely to change in the near future, since nobody wants to make do without hot water and comfortable living, nor should they have to. Nevertheless, there are ways to reduce domestic energy demand.
In recent years, the construction and chemical industries have developed innovative technologies and products that contribute significantly to increased energy efficiency. Energy efficient exterior insulation and finish systems (EIFS) and water-repellent insulating materials impregnated with silicone products reduce heat loss in the home and lead to a drastic reduction inheating costs. Silicone resin emulsion paints also help conserve energy because they keep exterior wall dry and, thus, preserve the insulating effect of the masonry.Note de contenu : - Reducing energy costs

In this work, we attached biocidal moieties (Isobornyl methacrylate, IBOMA) to the side chains of the polyacrylic polymer to form the antifouling polymer (AFP). Then, the hydrophilic polysiloxane (HP) was prepared through the polyaddition of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and alkoxysilane onto the main chain of the hydrogen silicone oil. Finally, the hydrophilic fouling release coatings (FRCs) were formed by the reaction or winding of antifouling polymer and HP polymer with an interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) method (IPN-FRCs). The effects of the content of AFP and HP on the adhesion, surface roughness, and antifouling performance of the applied coatings on substrate are thoroughly studied and revealed in details through different analytic techniques. The IPN-FRCs exhibit high adhesion strength to the substrate, and the surface roughness is greatly reduced when submerged in seawater. Furthermore, the IPN-FRCs have high performance against seawater bio-organisms, such as barnacles, during both in-lab and marine field tests when right polymer ratios were chosen. Thus, the novel FRCs may have great potential to be applied for marine vessels in line with their low-cost in raw materials and high performance of the final products. The need for nontoxic antifouling coatings has encouraged material scientists to develop a class of organic coatings for diverse applications. As a versatile thermosetting resin and well known for coating application, antifouling characteristics have been integrated into epoxy along with anticorrosion and adhesive functions. Accordingly, both micro- and macro-biofoulings have been successfully controlled by using epoxy-based antifouling coatings. Epoxy nanocomposites, silicon-grafted epoxy, epoxy-aided conductive polymer blends, and nanocomposites are important antifouling epoxy variants far and wide examined in developing epoxy-based coatings. Besides, some purpose-specific multifunctional smart coatings based on epoxy with antifouling features are used to integrate several functions into one material. This review discusses various types of epoxy-based antifouling coatings. The ability of nanomaterials, siloxanes, and conducting polymers to induce antifouling activity into the epoxy and corresponding antifouling mechanisms is also covered. The review concludes with the enormous potential of antifouling epoxy coatings as cost-effective, environmentally sustainable solution to biofouling in diverse industrial applications. Finally, the future ahead of antifouling epoxy coating is patterned.Note de contenu : - Antifouling epoxy nanocomposites

The objective of this work was to compare five different resin types (epoxy, acrylic, alkyd, silicone, and silicone–epoxy hybrid) in an intumescent formulation and to study the influence of resin concentration on the fire protection performance of the coating. Results from TGA and MCC analysis of resins and coatings indicated that coatings containing silicone are thermally stable and release smaller amounts of heat. In the fire resistance test, samples containing epoxy and silicone resins had lower temperatures (130–160°C) compared to the other samples. It has also been found that it is possible to decrease resin concentration in formulations containing epoxy and silicone resins up to 25.6% and to maintain or even improve their fire protection capability.
