Tannage Résumé : Effects of alkali halides and sulphates on thermal stability of insoluble and precipitated fibrous collagens have been examined in the acid-to-neutral pH range. The salt-pH levels studied corresponded to the range of conditions encountered from acid pickling to saturated brine curing. Fluoride and chloride salts stabilised collagen whereas the bromides and iodides tented to stabilise at low concentrations in acid solution only, but were structural destabilisers at high concentration. Halide effects were strongly pH-dependent and a feature of the results was the relatively small increase in collagen stability in saturated sodium chloride at neutral pH (curing conditions) compared with the large stability increase found at saturation at acid pH. Alkali sulphates on the other hand, stabilised fibrous collagen substantially at all pH levels. Assuming that an increase in heat stability of collagen is also correlated with incresed resistance to bacterial attack, the results suggest that curing in acidified brine offers additional protection. In addition, salt concentration in acid medium can be substantially decreased without affecting the excess stability in collagen. Practical implications of these results are discussed with reference to the problem of salt reduction in curing and the use of sulphates as penetration assistants in Mimosa cure and rapid vegetable tannage. [article]
Titre : Stabilization of aluminium pigments in aqueous alkaline media by styrene copolymers Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Bodo Müller Année de publication : 1995 Article en page(s) : p. 59-62 Note générale : Bibliogr.

Revêtements en phase aqueuse:Peinture en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Aluminium pigments react in alkaline aqueous media (e.g., waterborne metallic paints) with the evolution of hydrogen. Low- and high-molecular weight styrene-maleic acid copolymers inhibit the corrosion of aluminum pigments in a mixture of water and butyl ether of ethylene glycol at a pH value of 10 very effectively and are much better corrosion inhibitors than high-molecular weight polyacrylic acids or a styrene-acrylic acid copolymer. There is a correlation between the composition of the styrene-maleic acid copolymers and the evolved hydrogen volume: the lower the acid number the lower the hydrogen volume ― resulting in a higher corrosion inhibiting effect. Tension superficielleIndex. décimale : 668.1 Agents tensioactifs : savons, détergents Résumé : Experimental studies have been conducted to explore the interfacial tensions in an acid-free oil/alkali/surfactant system, and sodium hydroxide is used as the alkali chemical. The influences of salt and alkali on the interfacial activity of oil/surfactant systems were studied by the measurement of interfacial tensions and partition coefficients. The results showed that in an appropriate concentration range, an ultra-low interfacial tension could be obtained in the acid-free oil/alkali/surfactant system, and compared with the salt; the function of alkali for lowering interfacial tensions and improving partition coefficients is more significant.

The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed that carboxyl groups were introduced onto the fibre surface after an alkali treatment. The mean zeta potentials were 7.19 mV for the original sample and -12.1 mv for the treated sample. The surface morphology measured using atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy indicated the presence of a very rough surface structure for the alkali-treated sample. The alkali-treated sample showed a higher equilibrium exhaustion than the untreated sample did. The adsorption isotherms of the treated fabric followed the Langmuir sorption model.
