The results of Fourier transform IR spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and dynamic light scattering suggested the obtained hybrid particles emerged with trilayer core–shell pattern. Contact angle analysis, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and atom force microscopy results indicated that the hybrid film containing SiO2 NPs showed higher hydrophobicity, lower surface free energy and water absorption, in comparison with the control system (without SiO2 NPs). Compared with the control system, the hybrid latex film containing SiO2 NPs in the fluorinated polyacrylate shell layer showed the higher content of fluorine atoms and a rougher morphology on the film surface. Additionally, thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated the enhanced thermostability of PSQ-based nanosilica composite fluorinated polyacrylate latex film. The electrospun PA6 nanofibers were functionalized using electroless deposition technique. Oxygen low temperature plasma treatment was applied to substitute the conventional roughening process using concentrated sulfuric acid-potassium dichromate. The deposition of copper (Cu) on the PA6 nanofibers was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The observations revealed the uniform coating of the PA6 nanofibers with thin films of Cu. It was also found that the surface conductivity of the PA6 nanofibers was significantly improved by the Cu deposition. The combination of electrospinning and electroless deposition will provide a new approach to producing the functional nanofibers for various applications. TopographieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : High throughput combinatorial characterization was performed on thermosetting siloxane-urethane coatings in order to find a correlation between the characterization techniques, surface topography, and adhesion strength of barnacles. A series of coatings having microtopographical surfaces with different domain sizes were prepared based on a thermosetting siloxane-urethane system. This microtopography was formed spontaneously during the film-formation process. These surfaces were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), surface energy, dynamic contact angle, and pseudo barnacle pull-off adhesion and were compared to pure polyurethane (PU) and silicone rubber control. Surface energy and dynamic contact angles were measured by an automated surface energy measurement system and pull-off adhesion values were obtained from a high throughput pull-off adhesion measurement unit. The results were compared with the adhesion strength of barnacles.

Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In order to improve the wettability and antiprotein adsorption property of PDMS, heptamethyltrisiloxane (a well-known superspreader) was coated onto the PDMS substrates by a swelling–deswelling process. PDMS films were first immersed in heptamethyltrisiloxane solution mixtures to coat heptamethyltrisiloxane onto PDMS. During the deswelling process, the hydrophobic siloxane group of the superspreader heptamethyltrisiloxane was trapped in the PDMS matrix, while the hydrophilic group EO was exposed to the surface. In this manner, heptamethyltrisiloxane was finally coated on the PDMS surface via swelling–deswelling process. Contact angle measurements, optical property analyses, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy were used to confirm that durable hydrophilic and transparent PDMS surfaces were successfully obtained. The PDMS surface wettability could be adjusted by tuning the solubility parameters of the solution mixture. Additionally, antiprotein adsorption property was investigated and the result indicated the heptamethyltrisiloxane was tethered onto the PDMS surface. The swelling–deswelling method can be applied for the modification of other crosslinked polymers to obtain antifouling surfaces and functional materials for biomedical applications.

Tannage Résumé : To investigate further the interaction between epoxides and collagen in epoxy tanning, collagen solutions (3 mg/ml) cross-linked with various concentrations (0.5–4-wt%) of 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (BDDGE) at low temperature (4ºC), alkaline conditions (pH = 10) were prepared. The sodium dodecyl sulfate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the intact triple-helix structure of the cross-linked collagen. With the increasing concentration of BDDGE, the denaturation temperature measured using VP-DSC increased from 42.56 ºC to 44.25ºC and thermogravimetric analysis showed that the decomposition temperature increased from 333.0ºC to 351.8ºC. In addition, the rheology properties such as G¢, G² and η* were measured with a rotary rheometer using dynamic frequency scanning. The trinitrobenzensulfonic acid method and atomic force microscopy were used to investigate the interaction between collagen and BDDGE. The results indicated that the changes in cross-linked collagen performance were attributed to the transition of collagen aggregation caused by cross-linking. In addition, the transition point of 2-wt% BDDGE was the key node for the formation of a mature cross-linked network and the cross-linking barely increased above that. It is hoped that these findings deepen the understanding of epoxy tanning and provide guidance for the practical use of epoxides in tanning and biomaterials.
