These innovative ingredients allow cosmetic formulators to develop finished products based on vegetable derived ingredients which conform to modem trends without compromising important parameters such as efficacy and sensorial performance which have great impact on consumer perception. Consequently hair care products today can be both green and efficient, satisfying all the criteria which are considered of major importance by informed, motivated and environmentally-savvy consumers which place emphasis on issues such as renewability, sustainability and eco-friendliness while still looking for quality, performance and cost-effectiveness in the personal care products they purchase. TalcIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Opacifiers and pearlising agents are widely used to improve the appearance of shower gels and shampoos. Most current opacifying and pearlising solutions are based on synthetic ingredients, such as : styrene/acrylate copolymers for opacifiers, glycol stearate derivatives with fatty amides or mica-coated with a high refractive index metal oxide coating for pearlising agents.
These synthetic ingredients are in the line of fire due to current trends towards zero-plastic and zero-nano particle products. Beides, they can also be difficult to use due to pH restrictions, need for high-temperature processes, and compatibility issues with other ingredients, particularly with cationics.
This study demonstrates that a specific natural kaolin-based solution can be used to replace synthetic opacifiers and a specific natural talc-based solution can replace conventional pearlising agents.Note de contenu : - METHODS : Formulations - Instrumental test : colour measurements - Instrumental test : opacity measurements - Panel test : pearlescence intensity measurements
- RESULTS : A new kaolinite mineral to replace synthetic opacifiers - An innovative talc mineral to replace pearlizing agents
- DISCUSSION : The innovative kaolin imparts opacity and whiteness thanks to its unique porous morphology - The talc-based talc pearlising agents imparts pearlescence thanks to controlled lamellarty

SurfactantsIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Esters of ethoxylated polyglycerins are a new, interesting class of non ionic thickeners for use in modern body care and hair care products containing surfactants. The viscosifying effect of polymers of different structures in ether sulfate/betaine mixtures is investigated. A marked structure-effect relationship is evident. The degree of esterification is recognized as an important parameter, and the best thickening effect is achieved if the polymer has a maximum number of ester units. The efficiency similarly depends on the degree of ethoxylation. Taking the diglycerin derivatives as an example maximum effect is achieved at about 150 mol FO. Systematic studies identify PEG-150 polyglycery1-2 tristearate as the target structure with optimum thickening properties.
The higher efficiency of PEG-150 polyglyceryl-2 tristearate compared to the commercial thickeners PEG-150 distearate and PEG-120 methyl glucose dioleate is shown in surfactant systems with additives that have a diluting effect. Addition of salt and/or laureth-3 leads to an additional synergistic viscosity effect.
As an additional alternative to the waxlike polymer a liquid, cold-processable mixture of PEG-150 polyglyceryl-2 tristearate in PEG-6 caprylic/capric glycerides is presented.Note de contenu : - Viscosity as a function of polymer structure
