VernisIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The search for environmentally friendly coatings has gained relevance in recent years. To circumvent the use of volatile organic compounds, ultraviolet light curing has attracted considerable attention, especially with the recent advances in light emitting diodes (LEDs), wherein one of the most important components is the photoinitiator. Since UV-LED curing has a narrower wavelength spectrum than regular UV curing, the choice of photoinitiator is crucial. In this study, the influence of six types of photoinitiators in the curing of polyester acrylate varnishes was investigated. The post-curing optical, thermal, mechanical, dynamic mechanical, and morphological properties of these varnishes were examined. All varnishes were completely cured, and the resins cured with LED 1711 and diphenyl (acyl) phosphine oxide exhibited the lowest post-curing photoyellowing. Satisfactory mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties were achieved for all samples. However, due to the thickness of the films, more studies are needed to optimize the surface roughness of the varnishes. Sol-gel, ProcédéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Hybrid sol–gel coatings are widely used as protective layers for aluminum alloys because of their barrier abilities. This study aims at explaining the barrier properties of a sol–gel coating based on alkyltrimethoxysilane and methacrylate resin by its film structure. This approach was examined by modifying one photopolymerization parameter, e.g., by varying the content of radical photoinitiator. By neutral salt spray test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, the barrier properties are highlighted. The film structure is related to thermomechanical properties of films whose glass transition temperature and elastic modulus are measured by dynamic mechanical analysis and nanoindentation, respectively. On a finer scale, conversion of methacrylate functions calculated from Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy has given information on the chemical structure of films. The morphology of these coatings is studied by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy operating in tapping mode, and X-ray diffraction. Results revealed that formulations containing between 3 and 9 wt% of radical photoinitiator exhibit the maximal conversion of methacrylate functions and, at a microscopic scale, a homogeneous coating where the two organic and inorganic networks are well interpenetrated. This hybrid sol–gel microstructure corresponds to the highest glass transition temperature and the highest mechanical characteristics (elastic modulus, E and hardness, H) and the highest protection performance. This results in the best barrier properties, and thus the highest corrosion resistance. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Materials - Film preparation - Methods

Thiol–ene click reaction can overcome the shortcomings of common UV curing techniques. In this paper, the vinyl-terminated hyperbranched polyester (VTDP) was incorporated into the curing system of di-ene (A2) and trithiol (B3). Trithiols, including 1,3,5-tris(2-hydroxyethyl)isocyanurate tris(3-mercaptopropionate) (THMP) and trimethylolpropane tris(3-mercaptopropionate) (TMMP), were synthesized by an esterification between 3-mercaptopropionic acid and 1,3,5-tris(2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate, and tri(hydroxymethyl)propane, respectively. The UV-initiated thiol–ene click reaction between 1,4-butanediol diacrylate (BDDA) and trithiols (TMMP and THMP) was researched by adjusting different VTDP content. FTIR spectral analysis showed that the thiol–ene reactions proceeded smoothly and the conversion degree of acrylic groups was higher than that of thiol groups. The pencil hardness and abrasion resistance of the cured film increased first and then decreased with the increase in VTDP content, but both their flexibility and adhesion had little change. Their glass transition temperatures increased slightly with the increase in VTDP content. THMP has better positive effect than TMMP on the pencil hardness, abrasion resistance and thermal performance of the cured film.
