Revêtements:PeintureIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Metals, in particular steel and aluminium, are among the most important construction materials to be met in everyday life. However, these versatile materials are prone to corrosion, resulting in safety impairments, aesthetic failures, and, on the bottom line, economic damage. A major part of surface engineering of metals therefore is focused on corrosion protection.
Organic coatings have been used on any substrate for design purposes as well as to preserve the outward appearance. When applied to metals, corrosion protection becomes their most important technical feature. Though, in this respect, the primary effect of a coating is to for a physical barrier, there is no simple rule of "the thicker, the better". Effective corrosion protection provided by an organic coating requires proper preparation of the substrate surface, expert formulation of treatment and coating chemicals and appropriate application processes, as well as adaptation to different uses and service environments.
A lot of literature has been published on single aspect of corrosion protective coatings. However, corrosion protection by organic coatings is a truly cross-functional issue. Whereas, to the lead author's opinion, a unified approach to this taks is lacking that highlights the role of all disciplines involved in the creation and use of corrosion protection coatings for metals.
The intention of this book is to provide this missing synopsis. It features an up-to-date picture of the quality and chemistry of a substrate surface, its proper preparation by conversion treatment, the function of resins and anticorrosive pigments in paints, and novel concepts for corrosion protection. It is addressed to all parties involved in metal surface and coatings engineering, both the supplier and the user, both the experts as well as the student in any of the single disciplines. It is intended to contribute to a better understanding of the mutual roles and responsibilities in corrosion protective organic coatings, and pave the way to a more durable and sustainable preservation of our valuables and resources.Note de contenu : - Surface preparation

Silsesquioxanes oligomères polyhèdresIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : An array of quaternary ammonium functionalized-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (Q-POSS) compounds with different alkyl chain lengths and counter ions were synthesized using a two-step process. First, octasilane POSS was functionalized with dimethylamino groups by hydrosilylation with allyldimethylamine. Next, partial quaternization of the tertiaryamino-functional POSS was achieved using an alkyl halide to produce the Q-POSS. Alkyl chain length of the Q-POSS compounds varied from –C12H25 to –C18H37 and the counter ions varied between chlorine, bromine, and iodine. Moisture-cured polysiloxane coatings were prepared by dispersing Q-POSS molecules into a solution blend of silanol-terminated polydimethylsiloxane, methylacetoxysilane, and a catalyst. To evaluate the utility of the Q-POSS molecules as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial additive, the antimicrobial activity of the coatings toward the Gram-negative bacterium, Escherichia coli, the Gram-positive bacterium, Staphylococcus aureus, and the opportunistic fungal pathogen, Candida albicans, was determined using an agar plating method. The results obtained showed that both the composition of the Q-POSS and the composition of the polysiloxane matrix affected antimicrobial properties. Compositions were identified that inhibited the growth of all three microorganisms on the coating surface. Surface Raman spectroscopic analysis was performed on selected set of coatings to understand the relative concentration of Q-POSS molecules at the coating surface.
RevêtementsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Functional antimicrobial low-density polyethylene (LDPE) films with coatings containing different amounts of pyrogallol (PGL), a natural phenolic substance, and polyurethane were prepared. To examine the applicability of the prepared LDPE/PGL films in packaging, the films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray diffraction. The role of the coating, the barrier and color properties, and the antimicrobial activity of the films were evaluated. The thermal stability of the LDPE/PGL films was affected by the PGL concentration. Coatings with pyrogallol caused the barrier properties for water, and oxygen was increased from 0.78–0.32 to 470 ± 23.2–273 ± 57.1 (g mm)/(m2 h kPa), respectively. These findings indicate that the barrier properties of the LDPE/PGL films were highly improved compared to those of neat LDPE. Moreover, the LDPE/PGL films exhibited acceptable antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) and Escherichia coli (Gram-negative), especially for S. aureus. Further studies are necessary to increase the thermal stability of the pyrogallol coatings with the LDPE substrate in order to improve their performance and extend their packaging applications.
Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Building on prior work, some ideas are offered on further research that might provide better linkage between coating composition and durability. Further research may be particularly necessary in order to achieve future environmental goals as well as to adequately replace petrochemicals with renewable resources. Stochastic models have provided some understanding of how coating properties, such as gloss, toughness, corrosion protection, etc., deteriorate in service and have also helped in understanding why accelerated weathering has only a tenuous connection with natural exposure. Using these models and other observations, for example, of film formation and adhesion, one can see where the present knowledge is incomplete and where assumptions must be made, and where approximations must be inserted. Although the focus here is on durability, questions could equally arise in other aspects of coating science, e.g., on film formation, crosslinking chemistry, formulation science, etc. Note de contenu : - STOCHASTIC CALCULATION OF DAMAGE
