Protection contre le rayonnement ultravioletIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The effects of various nano-particle types and sizes on color, wettability, and surface chemistry of radiata pine (Pinus radiata) sapwood samples were investigated over 6 weeks of outdoor exposure. Specimens were treated with 0.2% wt/wt water dispersions of zinc oxide (ZnO), titanium dioxide (TiO2), aluminum oxide (Al2O3), silica dioxide (SiO2), cerium dioxide (CeO2), and iron oxide (Fe2O3), and four nano-sizes of Fe2O3. Color changes during exposure were characterized by measuring CIE L*a*b* color parameters, surface wettability changes were assessed using water droplet contact angle, and chemical changes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Nano-particles protected wood from photo-discoloration to differing degrees with iron oxide providing the most effective and consistent protection. Smaller alpha Fe2O3 nano-particles provided better UV protection. Nano-particles did not reduce wettability of wood after UV exposure nor were they able to completely prevent lignin degradation. Zinc oxide nano-particles provided some cellulose and hemicellulose protection during UV exposure. Iron oxide nano-particles exhibited some potential for limiting degradation, but the differences were small and not significant from untreated controls. The results suggest that combinations of zinc and iron oxide might be useful for UV protection, and further trials are planned with these mixtures.
Projection au plasmaIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this study, Al2O3 films with an Ni-based buffer layer were prepared on a Cu substrate by plasma-ion assisted deposition (PIAD). The main purpose of this study is to develop a novel electrical insulating film to be used at high temperature. X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra show the Al2O3 films prepared by this method are amorphous. The results of atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and auger electron spectroscopy (AES) analyses reveal that the Al2O3 films perfectly adhere to the substrate through the buffer layer, no visible defects were observed, and no impurity from Ni or Cu was detected. The diffusion of Cu into the Al2O3 film at high temperature is suppressed. Al2O3 films with an Ni-based buffer layer exhibit excellent resistivity (>1010Ω·cm) even after experiencing a high temperature environment as high as 600°C 10 times. Silicate d'aluminium
Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Alumina-silica composite coatings were prepared on the surface of graphite paper by chemical vapor deposition using AlCl3/SiCl4/H2/CO2 as precursor in the temperature range of 300 to 550°C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to examine the phase composition and the microstructure of the coating, respectively. The results indicated that a dense, uniform, and adherent alumina-silica composite coating can be prepared on graphite paper substrate by chemical vapor deposition at 550°C. Alumina-silica composite coating is composed of particles or nodules of varying size. Each particle is often composed of a number of finer particles. The phases of the 550°C composite coating include gamma-alumina and amorphous silica. The elemental chlorine content in the composite coating decreases with increasing deposition temperature. The surfaces of the alumina-silica composite coatings are affected by deposition temperature. There are some obvious micro-cracks in the 300°C composite coating, which are attributed to a mismatch of the coefficient of thermal expansion between composite coating and graphite paper. The 550°C alumina-silica composite coating can be completely turned into mullite after heat-treatment at 1350°C for 0.5 hr in argon atmosphere. ViscositéIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Recycling of plastic materials has become more environmentally important than recycling of other materials. The most important problem during recycling is the presence of oil, dirt, dust and metal particles that are mixed with plastic materials. These mixtures can change their its mechanical and physical properties and it is quite costly to remove them completely. Removing iron alloy particles from plastic is possible by using the magnetic method. However, removing non-metallic materials requires extra processing. In this study, the use of recycled High-Density Polyethylene (rHDPE) without an expensive cleaning processes has been investigated. Different amounts of aluminium oxide (Al2O3) were added to High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) to simulate the effect of non-metallic material involved. The effect of these contamination rates on the mechanical and physical properties of HDPE was examined in detail. For this purpose, recyclable materials were produced by mixing rHDPE with 1%, to 7% Al2O3. The results show that up to 7% of the mixture has acceptable effects on the properties of HDPE. When the results of the experiments are examined, it is observed that there is a 3.74% change in the elastic modulus of the material. This means, that up to 7% non-metal contaminated rHDPE material can be used without any costly recycling process. Note de contenu : - Preparation of samples
