We found that it is possible to use such UV curable water-based formulations as matrices for the preparation of nanocomposites in which the filler is generated in situ by means of the sol-gel chemistry. We prepared silica-based nanocomposites and characterized ther comparing their performances with those of the silica-free coatings. Moreover, the article discusses the influence of the addition of a coupling agent between the organic and inorganic phase on the final properties of the nanocomposites.
(Wikipedia)

The researches were carried out on the chrome-tanned garment leather. Nano zinc oxide at the proportions of 0.25%, 0.5% and 1% on nitrocellulose (N/C) emulsion amount were used in the finishing process of leathers. The finished garment leathers were exposed to an artificially accelerated ageing process at 80°C for 24 hours and 80°C/UV for 24 hours. Cr(VI) amounts in each leather sample were evaluated in compliance with ISO/FDIS 17075 standard test method based on the reaction of chromium(VI) with diphenylcarbazide and subsequent colorimetric determination at 540nm by using a double beam Shimadzu 1601 UV visible region spectrophotometer. The leathers finished using nano ZnO were compared to control samples and the way in which ZnO nanoparticles affect Cr(VI) formation was statistically examined by the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Duncan test. According to research results, it was determined that Cr(Vl) amounts arising in the garment leathers after photoageing were rather high and that the use of nano zinc oxide in finishing process substantially eliminated Cr(VI) formation statistically by providing high UV protection. 18,31 ± 2.46ppm of Cr(Vl) occured under 80°C/UV for 24 hours was decreased to less than 3ppm by 1% of nano ZnO. Using 0.25% and 0.5% of nano ZnO on the amount of N/C emulsion applied also reduced the levels of Cr(VI) to under 3ppm. Note de contenu : - Materials

Nanoparticles have shown a positive development due to its own various properties, functionalities and its applications in Cosmetics. One example where consumer expectations grow and the demand increases are UV protectors or sun creams. It was concluded that nanoparticles can be used in cosmetics like sunscreen to increase UV protection and prevent bacteria growth simultaneously. The available products are characterized by advantages and disadvantages of the various UV protection factors, and so far, no single material combines all desired properties. Nanotechnology shows an advantage character as it can be used to change the properties of the finely produced nanoparticles and influences products from various sectors as well as industries for a wide variety of applications, UV protection being amongst them.
Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The effect of alumina and silica nanoparticles on mechanical, optical, and thermal properties of UV-waterborne nanocomposite coatings was investigated. The addition of nanoalumina and nanosilica was shown to decrease the hardness because of nanoparticle aggregation. In comparison to the neat coating and despite the presence of aggregates, the scratch resistance of nanocomposite coatings was significantly improved. As expected, the gloss of UV-waterborne coatings was reduced following the addition of nanoparticles due to an increase of the surface roughness. Alumina and silica nanoparticles were found to enhance the glass transition temperature of PUA nanocomposite coatings by hindering the mobility of macromolecular chains at the interface around the nanoparticles. Finally, the interest and efficiency of grafting trialkoxysilanes was demonstrated with the study of nanosilica behavior. Not only was the dispersion of nanosilica enhanced following trialkoxysilanes grafting onto silica nanoparticles, but also the scratch resistance and the adhesion of UV-waterborne coatings containing nanosilica markedly increased even with 1 wt% content. Silica which is recommended in the wooden furniture and kitchen cabinet manufacturing industry as nano-reinforcement provides improved properties well suited in surface coating applications to efficiently protect surface of wood substrates. Biotechnologie
