Four poly(ethylene terephthalate) yarns for seat-belt webbing were prepared with different formulations and under different spinning conditions. Instrumental characterisation of the internal morphologies and physical properties confirmed that the structural characteristics are influenced by the draw ratio, heat-setting temperature and copolymer added, and that there are close correlations between the supramolecular structure and the physical and dyeing properties. In particular, the draw ratio was the most dominating factor, influencing both the mechanical properties and the dyeability. Traîtements de surfaceIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Nonwoven polyester (PET) fabrics have been extensively studied for various applications. However, the nonwoven PET fabrics have poor wettability. In this work, nonwoven PET fabrics were impregnated in a stable and transparent alumina sol that was prepared by the hydrolysis of aluminium isopropoxide using the sol–gel technique. The Al2O3 particles were coated on nonwoven PET fabrics after the rolling-drying process. The surface morphology of modified nonwoven PET fabrics was characterized by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The SEM and AFM observations revealed the formation of the Al2O3 particles on the fiber surface. The Al2O3 coating was also confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). The mechanical properties of the coated nonwoven PET fabrics were investigated using a tensile strength test, and the results showed that the mechanical properties were improved after surface sol–gel coating. The effect of Al2O3 on the wetting behavior of the fabric was also significantly improved.

Solutions de polymèreIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : In the present investigation, a novel ladder polymer, poly(azomethine ester), was prepared via solution polycondensation polymerization between terephthalic acid and the novel monomer. Terephthalic acid was regenerated from PET waste bottles by saponification process, whereas p-phenylenediamine was obtained via Hoffmann rearrangement method. A novel monomer, namely N,N′-bis(2,5-dihydroxy benzylidene)-1,4-diaminobenzene was prepared from the reaction of 2,5-di-hydroxybenzadehyde with p-phenylenediamine in the ratio of 2:1, respectively. For the first time a solution polycondensation method has been employed for the synthesis of a ladder polymer which is otherwise prepared commonly via Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction. The synthesized ladder polymer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR), carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (13C NMR), elemental analysis (CHN), X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results revealed that the ladder polymer possess highly regular ladder like framework, and that most of the ester groups have taken part in the side-by-side polymerization reaction.
