Five different halochromic dyes were tested: bromocresol purple, m-cresol purple, chlorophenol red, curcumin and bromothymol blue. Preliminary dyeing was carried out on wool, polyacrylonitrile, polyester, polyamide 6.6, cotton and cellulose acetate at 100°C for 40 minutes to evaluate affinity. All the dyes showed good affinity to wool and polyamide 6.6. Cotton required a mordant phase before dyeing. Washing and light fastness were evaluated for the dyed fabrics, as well as colour changes at different pH values. Some fibres displayed good dye fastness and halochromic properties. Bromothymol blue was selected to dye polyamide 6.6 and cotton fabrics. The dyed fabrics displayed good halochromic properties across a pH range of 4 to 10. Cotton fabrics exhibited an immediate colour change; polyamide 6.6 changed colour after several minutes. An industrial dyeing process was performed on natural cellulosic fibres. The results confirmed the possibility of scaling up the process with regard to textile applications of halochromic dyes. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Materials - Methods - Analysis

SpécificationsIndex. décimale : 677 Textiles Résumé : The UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) value of fabric sample depends on several parameters which are weight, count, cover factor, weave, nature of fiber, picks/inch, ends/inch, elastic recovery, moisture and wetting properties. Out of these, the nature of fiber, picks/inch, ends/inch are having big influence on the UPF value of the sample. In this study it was revealed that blending small percentage of polyester (PET) in cotton, improves the UPF values manifold. The correct balance of picks/inch, ends/inch and count in the fabric produce optimum shrinkage during pretreatments of the fabric which produces good ultraviolet resistance in the fabric. Textiles et tissus auto-nettoyantsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A fluorine-free superhydrophobic cotton fabric based on nickel stearate with multifunctional properties has been fabricated by a two step simple solution process. The cotton fabric (aNS-CF) exhibits static water contact angle, ~ 160°, and water shedding angle, < 10°, due to in-situ formation of hierarchical (micro and nano) broccoli-like structures of nickel stearate. The superhydrophobic cotton fabric, having superoleophilic property, has been used for separation of a series of light/heavy oil–water mixtures, and ~ 99% separation efficiency has been achieved after 10 cycles of separation process and it has been found to be slightly reduced to ~ 98% after 50 cycles. Antifouling and self-cleaning performance of the fabric has been evaluated effectively using solid and liquid contaminants as well as some common food liquids. The coating exhibits significant mechanical and chemical robustness and laundering durability in harsh conditions. The coated fabric possesses antibacterial (gram-negative E. coli and gram-positive S. aureus) and antifungal (C. albicans) properties leading to ~ 99.99% reduction in microbial growth, which has been remarkably sustained after 50 cycles of washing, abrasion and separation of oil–water mixtures. The stable multifunctional properties of the fabric exhibits a great potential towards a huge domain of practical implementations in smart textiles.
