We subdivide this rather broad research area into four main topics which are covered by the projects presented in this overview. The surfaces we study are surfactant-loaden water-air surfaces, the films are mainly free-standing thin foam films of less than 100 nm thickness, and the foams are 3D aqueous foams whose stability and drainage we investigate. As regards the topic “Complex Fluids” we study lyotropic liquid crystalline phases and microemulsions. In the past, we were able to establish two new tuning parameters for the formation and destruction of lyotropic liquid crystals, while current research focuses on the lyotropic mesomorphism of new surfactants and of surfactant mixtures. Apart from lyotropic liquid crystals microemulsions are a central theme in the group. Due to their unique properties and fascinating structure variety microemulsions offer a great potential as templates for the synthesis of new functional materials, which is a further research topic in our group. These studies involve the gelation of and the polymerisation in microemulsions preserving their nanostructure to create high surface area polymers. Currently, we also use microemulsions as tailor-made nano-compartmented reaction media. The studied reactions are either enzyme-catalysed conversions of substrates or the reduction of metal salts to synthesize mono- or bimetallic nanoparticles. In this context we focus on bicontinuous and water-in-oil droplet microemulsions. Last but not least we also synthesize new surfactant structures such as inositol-based surfactants and explore the properties. Note de contenu : - Surfaces, films, foams

The processes involved in the synthesis are: 1. Lipase catalysed interesterification of castor oil and linseed oil at near ambient temperature to form an interesterification product 2. Esterification with phthalic anhydride. The article also describes the comparison of coating properties of the newly synthesised alkyd resins with those prepared by the conventional method. The various coating properties determined were hardness, adhesion, impact resistance, storage stability, chemical resistance and colour. Overall, chemoenzymatically synthesised alkyd resins showed better coating properties than the commercially available alkyd resins. Revêtements -- Propriétés mécaniquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A key engineering parameter of thin coatings is their stiffness. Stiffness characterization of ultrathin coatings with a nanometer scale thickness is experimentally challenging. In this work, three feasible methods have been used to estimate the Young’s modulus of metal coatings on polymer films. The methods are: (1) nanoindentation, (2) strain-induced elastic buckling and (3) peak-force measurements integrated in atomic force microscopy. The samples were prepared by atomic layer deposition of TiO2 (6 and 20 nm thick) and mixed oxides of TiO2 and Al2O3 (4 and 20 nm thick). The differences in estimated Young’s modulus are interpreted in terms of the underlying assumptions and test conditions. Their specific advantages and drawbacks are also compared and discussed. In particular, the nanoindentation necessitates a sufficiently sharp indenter tip to make localized measurements dominated by the coating. The strain-induced elastic buckling method is simple in practice, but showed a large scatter due to variation in local coating thickness and irregular deformation patterns. The stiffness characterization using atomic force microscopy gave the most consistent results, due to a sharp tip with a radius comparable to the thinnest coating thickness. All methods gave a higher Young’s modulus for the TiO2 coating than for the mixed oxide coating, with a variation within one order of magnitude between the methods.

TitaneIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The present work presents a comprehensive model of both processes and outcomes of the spray pyrolysis mechanism, which is based on wide-ranging experience gained from experimentation involving a range of parameters. The deposition temperature and initial droplet size are the main parameters controlling film properties, including mineralogy, surface morphology, thickness, and bonding; the effect of annealing on these properties also is considered. The model is supported experimentally through the processing of films aerosol and ultrasonically spray pyrolyzed at 350°C, followed by annealing for 12 h at 500°C in air. Assessment of the mineralogy, chemical bonding, and crystallinity/residual stress of the films involved glancing-angle X-ray diffraction and laser Raman microspectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and crossed polarizers with an optical microscope, respectively.

VernisIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Depending on the industry, applications exist for all types of conformal coating materials. However, one family of conformal coatings can do something that no other coating can: it can conformally encapsulate with 100% protection, regardless of the size or intricacy of the assembly, device or component (even at micron and submicron thickness levels). No bridging of openings, voids or pooling; just a uniform, microscopic coating that acts as a shield against almost anything that various environments can throw at it.
